Are Jaylon Smith’s days numbered in Dallas?

Are you tired of talking about Jaylon Smith yet? You might be, but the topic seems to keep cropping up somehow, someway. But this week good ol’ number nine had his name in the news again, but it wasn’t for how he played in practice or something he said to the media. Instead, he found his name in plugged-in analyst Gregg Rosenthal’s “2021 NFL roster bubble: Notable players who could be traded or cut” article put out on the NFL.com website.

In the article, Gregg goes through multiple NFL players who could be cut or traded ahead of week one. Of the 18 players mentioned, Jaylon was the first player listed in the article, and Rosenthal had this to say about Smith and the possibility of him being moved before the start of the season:

I’ve written about this a few times already, but the Cowboys have officially started rookie Micah Parsons and free-agent pickup Keanu Neal over Smith and 2018 first-rounder Leighton Vander Esch during the last two preseason games.

It could be awkward to keep one of the team’s highest-paid players and vocal leaders as a rotational player. The depth at the position is buoyed by rookie fourth-rounder Jabril Cox, and the Cowboys could probably find a taker for a late-round pick if they are willing to pay some of Smith’s guaranteed $7.2 million base salary.

With the season quickly approaching, and roster cutdowns on the horizon, you’re seeing some trades start to pop up around the league with Sony Michel being traded to the Rams, Shaun Wade being traded to the Patriots, and Denzel Perryman being traded to the Raiders.

If the Cowboys are going to move Smith, it’s something you’ll likely see or hear about in the coming days.
