Cowboys news: Dek Prescott throws and Amari Cooper catches on a good news day for Dallas

Probably the best day for the Cowboys in weeks.

Cowboys fans holding their breath about the status of stars Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper were treated to a welcomed sight on Tuesday.

During another day at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, Calif., Prescott was seen throwing passes to Cooper, seemingly a promising step forward in both of their injury rehabilitation.

It was the first time Prescott has been seen throwing on the field since July 28 when he left practice early because of a muscle strain in his right shoulder. For Cooper, who has been on the physically unable to perform list during camp because of an ankle injury, it was a sign that he appears to be on track to be ready for the season opener against Tampa Bay on Sept. 9.

During an interview on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM], Cooper said he expects to be ready to practice “within the next couple of weeks.”

Taking a look at six players that could be on the bubble during final cuts.

Then the Cowboys used their first-round selection to acquire Penn State linebacker Micah Parsons 12th overall. Finally, Dallas used their first pick on Day Three of the draft to select LSU linebacker Jabril Cox in the fourth round. While the Cowboys did lose veterans Sean Lee to retirement and Joe Thomas to free agency, the new additions to the positional group, which already included former Pro Bowlers in Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith, has left the depth chart bloated with talent.

So where does someone like third-year linebacker Luke Gifford fit in? He’s currently battling other linebacker candidates like Azur Kamara, Anthony Hines III, and Francis Bernard for a spot on the roster that might not even be there depending upon how much depth the team decides to keep. By all accounts, Gifford is having a solid training camp and flashed as a defensive stalwart for the Dallas defense in their preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers recording four solo tackles, which tied for the most on the team.

This could simply be the case where there isn’t enough room on the roster for Luke Gifford, which would be a shame for an ascending player entering his third season with the club.

Just like that, the Cowboys are now up to 20. With three more additions last weekend, the Cowboys officially recognize 20 former players/coaches and contributors as members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Legends Drew Pearson and Cliff Harris were joined by former coach Jimmy Johnson as part of a two-year class from 2020 and 2021 that were inducted last weekend.

That gives the Cowboys an even 20 members. That doesn’t include the players that have Cowboys ties but didn’t play or coach long enough to be recognized fully with the Cowboys, including Bill Parcells, Terrell Owens, Mike Ditka and Herb Adderley.

But the Cowboys still have 20, starting with Mr. Cowboy, the first player inducted back in 1980.

Trysten Hill could find himself on the outside looking in come cut down day.

The Cowboys drafted Odighizuwa with the first of the three third-round draft picks (75th overall) to add to the defense that new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn wants to run. With second-year defensive tackle Neville Gallimore cemented himself as the starter, Odighizuwa can set his sights on the backup and rotation if he continues to make plays over these next three preseason games.

The player on the bottom of the depth chart or off the roster is defensive tackle Trysten Hill who is still rehabbing from a torn ACL injury. Hill no longer has a sponsor as Rod Marinelli stepped down as the team’s defensive coordinator after the 2019 season. The more time Hill misses gives players such as Odighizuwa and backup tackle Carlos Watkins better chances to make the roster.

At the moment there has not been much talk about Hill and his recovery process, nor does the coaching staff speak about his spot on the roster. We will have to wait until the team decides on roster cuts after the first wave begins on August 17th.

Taking a look at what a potential trade for cornerback CJ Henderson could look like.

Dallas Cowboys. Cowboys Receive: CB CJ Henderson. Jaguars Receive: TE Dalton Schultz, Dallas’ 2022 first-round draft pick The Cowboys secondary was far from a quality unit during a disappointing 2020 campaign. It doesn’t appear their defensive backs will be a strength in 2021 either, especially after losing Chidobe Awuzie and Xavier Rhodes in free agency.

While Dallas did add Keanu Neal and Malik Hooker to shore up the safety position and took a cornerback prospect in Kelvin Joseph with a second-round pick, the club would still heavily benefit from acquiring a promising CB like Henderson. One issue the Cowboys must contend with to acquire any talent right now is salary-cap space. According to Spotrac, the team has just $4.5 million available to spend, giving it less financial flexibility than all but two other organizations.

Fortunately for this cash-strapped squad, Henderson has already been paid the majority of the four-year, $20.5 million rookie deal he signed in 2020. He is due just a shade over $7 million for the next three seasons and has a cap hit of $4.7 million in 2021.
