Would Dak play this Sunday if it was a regular season game?

It’s July.

While there’s only a few more days left in this month, we’re still more than five weeks away from the season opener in Tampa Bay.

And Dak made it rather clear when asked Friday in a press conference that reactions to injuries are a bit different here in July.

More specifically, would he miss any time if this was in the middle of a season?

Dak Prescott: I Know I’ll Be Fine

“Yeah, I doubt it. I doubt it,” Prescott said. “I know we’re early. It’s early in training camp. I’m obviously trying to get to the season and get to the season healthy. That was the main reason .. I doubt in a game that (an absence) happens.”

Prescott continued, detailing that injuries like this occur in the middle of seasons and the course of action is certainly not the same.

“I think I’d do whatever is necessary and take the steps that are needed that I was ready for Sunday or Monday or whenever the game would be,” Dak said. “I knew I would get myself there one way or another and be able to perform the way that I would want to.”

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said as much in his press conference earlier in the day, speaking of Dak and all injuries for that matter.

“When it’s still July and we play our first game in September, we’re gonna be smart about it.”

So while the Cowboys have said Prescott will probably start resuming his throwing next week, it wouldn’t be out of the question if he took that entire week of, considering the team leaves for Canton, Ohio on Wednesday for Thursday’s game and will have Friday off before practicing with the Rams next Saturday.

OXNARD, Calif. — As it turned out, the Dallas Cowboys’ season did not end Wednesday when Dak Prescott stopped throwing passes because of a muscle strain, but it did speak to the fragility of their potential success.

The Cowboys’ hopes are pinned to Prescott, which is why they paid him a $160 million contract that included $126 million in guarantees this offseason. Their dilemma is not uncommon in the NFL. Quick: Name Russell Wilson’s backup with the Seattle Seahawks. See, not that easy.

The Cowboys’ No. 2 quarterback, at least for the moment, is Garrett Gilbert.

Gilbert, 30, has played in as many NFL games (seven) as he has professional teams — the Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, St. Louis Rams and the Orlando Apollos of the defunct Alliance of American Football.

“It’s part of being a backup quarterback. You’ve got to always be ready to step in at any point,” Gilbert said.

He has thrown 44 passes in those seven games and has 283 yards, a touchdown and an interception. All but six of those passes came in his one NFL start — last season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, three weeks after signing with Dallas. All but 40 of those yards came against the Steelers, too.

“That’s why he’s sitting here as the No. 2, and he’s done nothing but continue to impress Mike [McCarthy] and Kellen [Moore] in terms of what they feel like he could do if called upon,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “Feel like he can win a game for us, or games.”

Crazy or realistic?

When I was a young man, I played the popular Madden football video game series but they were not too kind for one Dallas Cowboys player. I talked about before what I where I thought the top Dallas Cowboys players should rank in Madden.

Wideout Amari Cooper kept his 92 grade from the previous season and while Ezekiel Elliott jumped up one point to 88, he is still tied with a running back who missed most of last season in Cincinnati Bengals runner Joe Mixon.

All of those grades still make me think that Madden continues to underrate Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

The QB list has one person on the Madden 99 club in Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes. He is followed by Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and the reigning MVP from Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers. So far I am on board with what the folks at EA Sports are telling me.

I still have Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson at four because I think Seattle is completely lost if he were to leave that city. He covers up many of their deficiencies and it is hard to argue against him. I would think the Dallas Cowboys are better prepared to play without Dak but not by much.

The fifth spot is where I have a big issue. Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson is a supreme athlete and has done some great things in his young career. Yes, he won the NFL MVP award but that mainly has to do with his legs rather than his arm.

“What have you been eating?” The question can carry several different connotations, of which can steer the conversation in a number of directions. Growing children hear the phrase frequently when visiting with family or friends they haven’t seen in a long time, which more often comes as a result of the allotted time than a stark growth spurt.

Aspiring body-builders are recipients of the same praise, as the results of their tireless work begin to unveil themselves in the form of rigid biceps and toned abdominals. And those with weight-loss objectives might hear it as their dietary disciplines begin to show fruitful exterior results.

Now, dropping pounds isn’t necessarily the main goal of most NFL athletes (in fact, oftentimes their goals are the exact opposite), but when additional body baggage slows down their pursuits, discarding carbs can produce transformative results. And when the Dallas Cowboys showed up at Oxnard for their annual training camp grind, a number of players showed off the results of the pounds they were able to shed off in the offseason.

Should the Cowboys trade for Xavier Howard?

OXNARD, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys have long-recognized the need to invest in their cornerback room. Does that mean, regarding a trade for disgruntled Miami Dolphins standout corner Xavien Howard, that it’s being worked on?

ESPN seems to think so. Two team sources tell us ESPN is wrong.

From Bristol:on Thursday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tried to build a case based on “rumors in league circles.”

Via Fowler: “Rumors persisted in league circles that Dallas looked into a Howard deal at some point this offseason, but aside from that … this is a Dallas move. All splash, and it solves a big need. The Cowboys’ pass rush needs more production, and what better way to help than with a true shutdown corner to buy rushers time.”

Respectfully, this is gibberish. Why? Because Dallas believes it did the needed “investment” work the last two Aprils.

Should Cowboys WR Amari Cooper be “On Notice” in 2021? – Jess Haynie, Inside the Star

The answer should be no.

On this morning’s Shan & RJ show on 105.3 The FAN this morning, host Shan Shariff said that Cooper is “on notice” this season. He said that he’s he’s heard “whispers” that the team is frustrated with Amari’s perceived lack of competitive drive and occasional injury issues.

Cooper is one of a few players, including DeMarcus Lawrence, Trysten Hill, and Greg Zuerlein, to begin this year’s training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He’s still dealing rehabbing from offseason ankle surgery.

As Shan brings out, there is a logical landscape that could lead to Cooper’s release. Dallas will have two more years of CeeDee Lamb’s rookie deal with a 5th-year option in 2024, plus the potential to re-sign Michael Gallup at a lower price than Amari.

At an average total compensation of $20m per year Cooper is currently the 4th-most expensive WR in football. He is scheduled to count $22 million against Dallas’ salary cap each of the next four seasons.

It’s not wild speculation to suggest that the Cowboys could consider cutting Amari after 2021. The dead money on Cooper’s contract will drop to just $6 million next year, meaning $16 million in cap relief if Dallas were to release or trade him.

If the plan is to dump Cooper for Gallup then it’s worth noting that most, if not all, of that money would go to Gallup’s second contract. But with Michael two years younger than Amari and having a proven chemistry with Dak Prescott, Dallas could decide it’s money better spent.

That said, this isn’t a case of a player underperforming their contract. Cooper has had over 1,100 yards and not missed a game in the last two seasons for Dallas. For whatever criticisms there are of his personality or lack thereof, he’s been a franchise WR where it matters.
