Dak Prescott’s on the mend. Should be good to go for the season opener, if not sooner.

The second MRI on Dak Prescott’s right latissimus strain showed what the Dallas Cowboys expected: Their quarterback is healing well.

Well enough to practice when the Cowboys get back on the field at Ford Center at The Star on Monday night for the first time this summer, or potentially see some preseason action Aug. 21 against the Houston Texans? Remains to be seen.

Prescott went through a third throwing session before the Cowboys’ 19-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals without any issue. He pulled himself from practice on July 28 because of soreness and was shut down from throwing for two weeks.

Hopefully Neville Gallimore will be back on the field sooner rather than later.

The news seems to be about as good as possible for Neville Gallimore.

Upon arrival back in Texas, the Cowboys’ second-year defensive tackle has undergone further evaluation on his elbow injury from Friday’s preseason loss to Arizona. The report back is that Gallimore dislocated the elbow but managed to avoid any major structural damage.

Reports indicate that Gallimore’s timeline ranges from six to eight weeks, but at the minimum it sounds like it’ll be more than a month. Even the longer timeline would have him back sometime in October, well before the halfway point of the season.

As far as multiple-week injuries go, that feels like the best possible scenario for Gallimore. The issue looked like it could have been much more severe, as Gallimore had his arm bent back during the Cowboys’ first defensive series of the game and left the field in an immense amount of pain.

Several of the Dallas Cowboys rookies are starting to step up and prove their worth.

Rookies make their presence known

It was an up and down performance from the Cowboys rookies. First-round selection Micah Parsons didn’t have much playing time, so there weren’t many splash plays, but you could see his speed and athleticism.

Second-round pick Kelvin Joseph struggled on the night, getting beat deep for a big gain on one possession, then got picked on by an inside move near the goal line. Joseph was outplayed by third-round pick Nahshon Wright, who came up with sticky coverage on two throws his way.

Osa Odighizuwa flashed his potential by utilizing his quickness on a few occasions and coming up with a tackle for a loss. If Gallimore is out for any extended amount of time, Odighizuwa might be in line for a larger role than expected.

It was another strong night for LB Jabril Cox, who finished with two tackles for a loss. Cox also demonstrated impressive closing speed while in pursuit.

For the Dallas Cowboys, it’s all eyes on Dak Prescott and his shoulder injury.

While some big-name quarterbacks coming off injuries are well ahead of schedule, Dak Prescott has proceeded notably slower.

And the Dallas Cowboys like that just fine.

If all goes according to plan, Dallas won’t trot out Prescott under center until at least the team’s third preseason game on August 21. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones classified it as “not out of the question,” according to the Dallas Morning News’ David Moore.

Dallas has every reason to tread lightly with its franchise passer after he suffered a shoulder strain in his throwing arm, which has led to only light throwing recently. Last year was a six-win debacle without Prescott, and given his top-10 ability, there’s no reason to rush him back into things.

Even if Prescott doesn’t suit up in a preseason contest, it’s hard to imagine he struggles much by the time the regular season arrives.

What caught your attention from the Cowboys loss to the Cardinals?

For the second straight game, the Cowboys “first-team” defense came away with an early turnover, and once again it was rookie LB Micah Parsons getting involved on the play. Lined up at MIKE on the play, Parsons was in on the forced fumble with Keanu Neal. Parsons’ ability to process plays quickly and look comfortable lining up at multiple positions has stood out in his first two exhibition games. Exactly who the Cowboys will take off the field to get Parsons snaps isn’t clear, but his play speed jumps out as the team works through it’s depth chart at LB.

After telling the Dallas media that he’s viewed as the Cowboys deep threat WR, Michael Gallup was certainly played that way by the Cardinals on his fourth-and-ten conversion. The Cowboys desperately needed to keep their offense on the field, and did so on their second drive when Gilbert made a strong throw to Gallup on a comeback route. The big-bodied Gallup sold the route up field well before coming back for the ball on the sideline.

Playing with a patchwork defensive line, the Cowboys linebackers and secondary did a good job rallying in run support. For a defense that lost contain on far too many run plays a year ago, Dan Quinn has this defense reacting well and setting the edge. Their interior depth at DT didn’t improve following the game, as they lost Neville Gallimore to an elbow injury.

Speaking of defensive tackle play, rookie Osa Odighizuwa may have played himself out of fourth quarter preseason snaps going forward. The Cowboys are excited about his versatility to play up and down the line. Odighizuwa’s strength allows him to push the pocket and force QBs off their spot, but also hold the line of scrimmage and allow others to rush. The Cowboys needed to come away from the draft with multiple starters on defense, and at this point in the preseason it looks like all three of their first picks could see starters playing time.
