Cowboys making more moves on the roster.

The Dallas Cowboys have been busy since “finalizing” their 53-man roster on Tuesday.

To catch you up since things first became somewhat final for the Cowboys, they have added another quarterback by claiming Will Grier off waivers (punter Bryan Anger was released temporarily to make room for him), they have finalized an initial 14-man practice squad (which includes Isaac Alarcón as an exemption as he is part of the International Pathways Program), and as Wednesday afternoon wrapped up the team brought in a running back to the active roster.

It is Corey Clement who will be joining the Cowboys backfield behind Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. Dallas is Clement’s third NFC East team as he has played for both the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.

It appears that the Cowboys plan to utilize the fifth-year runner on special teams as well which is normal duty for an RB3, something the Cowboys did not have on their initial roster. Ultimately this is a rather normal move for them to make as they construct their roster to the point that they want it.

At the time of publishing it is not certain who the Cowboys are going to be releasing to make room for Clement on the active roster, consider though that they have seven players who are candidates to head to injured reserve and that they also have five players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Candidates to head to injured reserve:

  • DT Neville Gallimore
  • DE Chauncey Golston
  • CB Kelvin Joseph
  • LB Francis Bernard
  • OT Josh Ball
  • TE Sean McKeon
  • WR Malik Turner

Cowboys players currently on Reserve/COVID-19 list (do not count against roster):

  • DT Carlos Watkins
  • S Damontae Kazee
  • G Connor Williams
  • WR CeeDee Lamb
  • WR Noah Brown

Allotting for those five, counting Clement, and then factoring in both Bryan Anger and long snapper Jake McQuaide (who the Cowboys released in a similar procedural move on Tuesday) the team needs to create eight roster spots. Even if the seven that we listed all head to injured reserve that means that a move has to come from somewhere to get to 53.

What’s more is that the Cowboys technically still have three open roster spots on their practice squad as well. If there is anyone there who they want to promote to the active roster (like tight end Jeremy Sprinkle) then another roster spot will have to be created. Needless to say the next couple of days will have some maneuvers made.

Speaking of the practice squad we broke down the 14-man group that the team announced on Wednesday in the latest video on the Blogging The Boys YouTube Channel. Make sure to subscribe to our channel (which you can do right here) so you don’t miss any of our videos!
