Who played and who didn’t during the Denver Broncos 29-12 win over the Cleveland Browns?

The Denver Broncos have won five straight games for the first time since the 2015 season. The team is remarkably healthy considering how injured the roster was last season (knock on wood). Health and improved coaching across the board (or almost the board) are the main reasons for the year over year improvement. Here’s who played and who didn’t against the Cleveland Browns last week.

Offense

Player Pos Num Pct
Mike McGlinchey T 67 100%
Garett Bolles T 67 100%
Quinn Meinerz G 67 100%
Lloyd Cushenberry III C 67 100%
Ben Powers G 67 100%
Russell Wilson QB 67 100%
Adam Trautman TE 61 91%
Courtland Sutton WR 52 78%
Javonte Williams RB 47 70%
Jerry Jeudy WR 41 61%
Marvin Mims WR 32 48%
Chris Manhertz TE 27 40%
Lil’Jordan Humphrey WR 20 30%
Samaje Perine RB 18 27%
Michael Burton FB 16 24%
Nate Adkins TE 7 10%
David Sills WR 5 7%
Justin Simmons FS 4 6%
Quinn Bailey G 3 4%
Jaleel McLaughlin RB 2 3%

For the eleventh straight game the Bronco OL started the game and played every single snap. Quinn Bailey played three snaps as the 6th offensive lineman.

Justin Simmons got four more snaps as the way way back safety in victory formation. He got more offensive snaps than Bailey, Jaleel McLaughlin, Luke Wattenberg, Cameron Fleming and Jarrett Stidham.

Javonte Williams got he lion share of RB snaps with 47 (70%). Samaje Perrine made the most of his 18 offensive snaps. McLaughlin only got two offensive snaps but carried the ball on both of them. Similarly Perrine got the ball on 8 of his 18 snaps. FB Michael Burton played 16 offensive snaps.

Adam Trautman played 61 offensive snaps (91%) while Chris Manhertz and Nate Adkins only played 27 and 7 respectively. That means we used plenty of two TE sets since we only ran 67 offensive plays.

Courtland Sutton played 52 snaps to lead the WR group. Jerry Jeudy played 41 and Marvin Mims played 32. It’s good to Mims getting more offensive snaps. LJ Humphrey got 20 and David Sills got five.

Three offensive players played no offensive snaps: Stidham, Fleming and Wattenberg.

Defense

Player Pos Num Pct
Justin Simmons FS 73 100%
Patrick Surtain II CB 73 100%
Alex Singleton LB 73 100%
Fabian Moreau CB 71 97%
Ja’Quan McMillian CB 59 81%
Zach Allen DE 55 75%
P.J. Locke FS 54 74%
Jonathon Cooper LB 50 68%
Baron Browning LB 49 67%
Josey Jewell LB 47 64%
Jonathan Harris DE 41 56%
Mike Purcell NT 35 48%
Nik Bonitto LB 32 44%
D.J. Jones NT 29 40%
Drew Sanders LB 21 29%
Matt Henningsen DE 19 26%
Tyler Lancaster NT 18 25%
Riley Moss CB 3 4%
Delarrin Turner-Yell FS 1 1%

Only three defenders played every snap this game: Simmons, Patrick Surtain and Alex Singleton.

PJ Locke played 54 snaps, so we must have used some formations where we only had one safety on the field. Delarrin Turner-Yell played one defensive snap.

Fabian Moreau played all but two offensive snaps – probably in short yardage or goal-line situations. Ja’Quan McMillian played 59 snaps. Riley Moss got on the field for three defensive snaps. Damarri Matthis did not play at all on defense this game. Tremon Smith didn’t either, but that is normal as he usually only plays on special teams.

Josey Jewell played 47 snaps as the other ILB. Drew Sanders played OLB on some snaps (passing downs) and ILB on others. He played 21 defensive snaps.

Baron Browning and Jonathan Cooper played 49 and 50 (of 73) defensive snaps. Nik Bonitto played 32.

We used three NT/DT players this game with Mike Purcell, DJ Jones and Tyler Lancaster playing 35, 29 and 18 snaps. I’m guessing we used some heavier sets with two DT/NT guys in an attempt to slow down the run. NFLGSIS.com shows that Lancaster, Purcell and Jones were on the field together for only eight plays this season. Lancaster played 13 snaps in the loss to KC and 18 snaps in the win over the Browns. I’m guessing all most of those snaps in the heavy DL package were in last Sunday’s game.

Zach Allen and Jonathan Harris played 55 and 41 snaps. Matt Henningsen got 19 snaps as the other defensive end.

The other defensive players who have not been mentioned and who did not play on defense are Justin Strnad and Ben Neimann.
