Open thread: What is the Lions’ biggest concern for 2021?

Is it a position group, or something else?
Whenever it’s time to clean house and bring in a new regime, you don’t normally expect a complete turnaround in Year 1. That may especially be the case for the Detroit Lions, who had a ton of holes to fill with the previous regime leaving behind a roster lacking in talent. Still, to the delight of many fans, the Lions’ front office did about as good of a job as you can ask for—at least on paper—using the resources at their disposal to clean up the mess as well as they could this offseason.
The Lions immediately addressed the trenches through the draft on both sides of the ball, and used free agency to focus on their need at wide receiver, where they had a ton of turnover. They also found a talented quarterback to replace Matthew Stafford, who wanted out of Detroit, and while Jared Goff surely isn’t quite on Stafford’s level, the value they were able to get out of that trade was more than expected.
With all that Brad Holmes and company were able to accomplish in their first offseason, there are still plenty of holes that they were unable to get to. The rebuild, or re-tooling, will have us waiting at least a couple of years before the Lions are contending. There are plenty of questions left unanswered with this team and only one more month left of no football.
Today’s Question of the Day is…
What is your biggest concern regarding the Lions heading into the 2021 season?
My answer: Safety depth.
The cupboard is bare at the safety position and while it’s obvious that the Lions just didn’t have enough resources to address every position in need this offseason, that doesn’t make it much easier to stomach.
The Lions have only two safeties under contract through the 2022 season—Will Harris and D’Angelo Amos—so it’s imperative that they make some moves next offseason and it’s likely it will remain one of their top needs heading into next year.
If we don’t see enough improvement out of guys like Jeff Okudah and Amani Oruwariye, then we may have to extend the concerns to the entire secondary. Time will tell.
