The New York Jets may not be able to acquire their dream receiver

Did the New York Jets’ biggest offseason plan just vanish?

If there’s one dream the Jets seemingly had this offseason, it was acquiring Davante Adams to pair him with Aaron Rodgers once more. The team pushed heavily to land Adams at the 2023 trade deadline, and reports indicated they would do the same this offseason.

However, with the Las Vegas Raiders’ decision to remove the interim label from Antonio Pierce and make him their permanent head coach, that dream may have just died.

Adams heavily supported the move.

“That’s my vote, and that’s basically how the whole locker room feels,” he gushed. “With good reason. He’s come in and done a great job. He’s continued to win us over. It’s not just the comfortable thing. I think having AP here will be good for this organization. He kind of embodies what it means to be a Raider. That mentality, that swag, and all the things he endorses [are] the things that I believe in.”

The Raiders’ move indicates that they may try to retool rather than rebuild. A team that went 5-4 down the stretch and retained its head coach is unlikely to break it all down. That means Adams may stay put in Las Vegas, especially since he is no longer disgruntled, as he was under Josh McDaniels.

This won’t prevent the Jets from making the phone call to the Raiders. They still haven’t hired a general manager, and it could be the vision for the team will change. The Raiders also don’t have a starting quarterback after benching Jimmy Garoppolo for the second half of the 2023 season. With the Raiders picking at No. 13, they are less likely to be able to acquire a Day 1 starter.

Still, the Jets’ aspirations for this offseason took a definite hit with the Pierce news.
