The domino effect that could begin when Seahawks name starting center

This offseason the Seattle Seahawks dug into their bag of cap tricks to use void years in player contracts for the first time in franchise history. Doing so effectively allowed the team to borrow from the cap space of future seasons and to add or retain several players they might not have been able to do otherwise. The list of players who signed contracts which included void years was not short and included Chris Carson, Carlos Dunlap, Ahkello Witherspoon, Gerald Everett, Ethan Pocic, Kerry Hyder and Benson Mayowa.

However, it appears that at least one of the players that the Seahawks used the future cap space credit card may wind up on the bench to open the 2021 season.

Many fans likely won’t be excited to hear that Kyle Fuller could be the starting center for the Seahawks in 2021, or at least to start the year. However, going with Fuller does create an interesting opening for the team when it comes to the remaining offensive line spots on the roster.

Pocic, of course, was drafted as a center, but has played both guard spots for the Hawks under both Tom Cable and Mike Solari. Thus, if Pocic is looked at by the team as the primary backup at either of the guard spots as well as center, then the need for the team to keep Jordan Simmons or Jamarco Jones as depth on the interior is lessened. If that proves to be the case, it would open up the possibility for the team to keep both Stone Forsythe and Jake Curhan on the roster this season while worrying less about losing Jones, Simmons or even Phil Haynes to the waiver wire.

So, there are still more than two weeks until the Hawks open the 2021 season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, but roster cuts are due by 4 PM New York time Tuesday and with the preseason finale Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers, there are still a whole lot of questions for the team to answer.
