Drew Lock looks good on first day of Broncos Minicamp

He was the day 1 winner according to most observers, but does it matter?
The Denver Broncos start of minicamp meant the start (restart) of the QB battle between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater. It may not be what people want to read about, but the topic is unavoidable.
Ian St. Clair and I started the MHR Radio Podcast off with a discussion about the outcome of day 1, a resounding “win” for Lock.

Why the quotation marks? Because winning in minicamp, or OTAs for that matter, feels hollow. I’m not downplaying Lock’s performance. It should be comforting to all of Broncos Country to hear that Lock had a good day.
It should also be a relief to know that he didn’t look better than Bridgewater just because Teddy had a bad day. They both seemed to perform well to start minicamp. Lock just stood out a little more to most observers.
That’s not a bad problem to have. I hope it continues, and they carry some momentum into into training camp, and then preseason, and eventually the regular season.
But forgive me if I don’t get too excited about a QB battle right now. It’s not that I don’t care. I just struggle to get hyped up for it.
The Broncos gave up almost 28 points per game in 2020, while only scoring 20. That’s a problem that has to be addressed. The offensive struggles were a key component to the defense allowing so many points. Much of that correlates directly with the play of the QB.
So, again, forgive me if I reserve my joy for some actual results.
However, it is nice to see positive stories coming out of minicamp. If day 1 is an indication of what’s to come, that is something we can all get behind. Continuing to see positive trends should translate to success when things really start to count.
