From the beginning, former Crimson Tide QB Josh Palet says, he had a confidence to him that was unique. “He acted like he owned the building when he walked in. It rubbed some people the wrong way and he didn’t care. He wasn’t really concerned about making friends, he was concerned about doing his job and winning.” On the surface, it sounds like the ideal description of any Alabama QB recruit. Do your job; that’s all that matters. But this manifested in every exchange Hurts had, both on and off the field. Once, according to a source, teammates whispered about a young Hurts taking the seat of another QB during meetings, much to the other QB’s chagrin. “(And he) was not prepared to surrender that seat back to its original occupant,” says the source, who requested anonymity so as not to overplay his relationship with certain players. “I took that to mean, ‘I’m here to stay.’ As the story was relayed to me, he was taking the seat — a seat in the front of the room — to send a message. So there are headwinds facing the Eagles in 2021, but there is a growing sentiment among some in the fanbase that maybe, just perhaps, they won’t be as bad as many are predicting. The NFC East, after all, did not have a single winning team in the division last year, and while Washington did improve themselves on paper this off-season, they still have no franchise QB. Dallas has offensive weapons, but still no defense. And New York, well, the Judge is still out on them just yet. But if the Eagles are going to win the NFC East, one thing almost certainly must happen. Jalen Hurts is going to have to ball out. Hurts is going to have to not only be a pretty good QB, he’s going to have to be an awesome one. Think back to 1999, when Andy Reid was in his first year as head coach, and he had an athletic rookie QB from Syracuse named Donovan McNabb. Like Hurts, McNabb came became the starter late in the season (his first start came in Week 10), and while his overall numbers weren’t great, they weren’t too different from Hurts’ numbers in his limited time last season.

Quarterback: Jalen Hurts. I thought it was weird during the offseason when some people on NFL Twitter wondered if the Eagles should look at a quarterback. I found this highly disrespectful to Jalen. I’ll be completely transparent, here; I’m a big Jalen Hurts guy. I thought he was amazing during the final games last year, especially when you consider what the Eagles were working with on the offensive line and at the wide receiver position. I’ll still contend he didn’t fumble that ball against the Dallas Cowboys. And not just because it cost me a couple of fantasy football championships. But this isn’t just about fantasy football adulation. I advocated for teams — especially teams like the Bears — to draft him last April. Jalen had 300-plus passing yards in back-to-back games in Weeks 15-16. His rushing was on point. And I already mentioned his rally against the Arizona Cardinals. There is a reason why the Eagles felt comfortable enough to trade Wentz to Indianapolis and roll with Jalen.

Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles: At least three tight end-needy teams have looked into Ertz, including the Chargers before they signed Jared Cook. The Colts were an option, but they gave left tackle Eric Fisher $8.38 million and want to re-sign Darius Leonard and Braden Smith, so they might be out at this point. Perhaps the Bills or a few others get involved, but expect this done some time this summer. Ertz badly wants out, Dallas Goedert is the future, and the Eagles have made clear they don’t want to move on without something in return. Teams could wait for Philly to be forced to cut him if there’s not enough trade value, but here’s to betting Ertz can still draw a Day 3 pick from a new team.

Offensive line. The extensive injuries on the offensive line certainly made life harder for the quarterbacks. Once again, the team is exuding confidence that all the injured starters from last year, Tyron Smith, La’el Collins, Zack Martin, and Tyler Biadasz, will be fully ready for the start of the season. Smith is telling the reporters that he is pain free for the first time in years after his neck surgery and ready to return to the level of play that made him one of the elite tackles in the league. Here is a case where we need to be aware of history. With Dallas, that tells us that we have heard the team exude this kind of positivity before, and it has turned out to be a load of something else entirely. With injuries, you just don’t know until the players are on the field for a few games. We’ll remain skeptical. Level: Uncertain.

The New York Giants’ prized free agent signing is all about the playbook this year. Kenny Golladay told reporters Tuesday that there is one thing he’s focused on in particular, heading into the 2021 NFL season. “I pretty much say this every year, just still becoming a better all-around receiver and that’s hand, routes and this year it’s going to be playbook,” said the former Detroit Lions wide receiver. “And just getting all my alignments and assignments correct.” When Golladay nails down that playbook, quarterback Daniel Jones should be the first one to be excited. In fact, Golladay and Jones both spoke about their growing relationship on Tuesday. “Me and Danny hooked up a few times outside of the facility … that’s my boy. I can’t wait to just really work with him deeper in training camp and especially when the season starts,” said Golladay.
