We have to understand, that is only his fifth start as an NFL quarterback. So pretty much, he is still a rookie and he is learning this game. I was very impressed by the way he handled this offense, recognized what he was seeing from the Atlanta defense, and he took advantage of the opportunities he was given.”

Winner: Jalen Hurts. Replacing Jalen Hurts felt like the not-so-subtle goal of the Eagles for most of the offseason. Now we’ve gotta wonder, why? Don’t get me wrong, the Falcons are hot ass, but still — this was a dominant game that proved so far that Hurts really has the skills. The quarterback finished with 264 passing yards and three touchdowns, quickly forming a rapport with rookie DeVonta Smith and showing the duo could evolve into being one of the better handcuffs in the NFL with more reps. It was so awesome to see, and should seriously assuage any thoughts of trading for Deshaun Watson. Not only did Hurts throw the ball well, he scrambled extremely effectively — finishing with 62 yards on the ground.

Hurts will face tougher defenses than Atlanta’s, but it was a great first step. The Eagles dominated on the road. Hurts played very well, using first-round receiver DeVonta Smith as his favorite target. Hurts completed 27 of 35 passes for 264 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He rushed for 62 yards, too. The Eagles looked good, which you couldn’t say often last season when Doug Pederson was coaching out the string before getting fired. Maybe the Eagles have something with Hurts. Perhaps Lurie knew best after all. At very least, Eagles fans can feel good about what they have at quarterback for one week.

The Eagles were a difficult team to project this offseason, but Hurts was always likely to be a productive fantasy option because of his mobility and willingness to push the ball deep. Hurts picked up where he left off from last season, scoring 28.76 fantasy points by way of 264 yards passing, three touchdowns and an additional 62 yards rushing on seven attempts. The Atlanta Falcons aren’t exactly the barometer for great defensive play, but this is the exact type of performance we expected from someone who flashed as often as Hurts did as a rookie.

The former second-round pick may need to improve upon his league-worst 3.6 aDOT moving forward, but Philly should be able to move the ball as long as he’s making smart reads and playing within the offense, two areas of improvement Sirianni mentioned in his postgame press conference.
49ers lose two key players to injury ahead of Eagles game – BGN
Verrett has been no stranger to injury throughout his career but he’s looked good when actually healthy. The 2014 first-round pick allowed just a 76.2 passer rating when targeted last year. Verrett was clearly the 49ers’ best defensive back prior to getting hurt. His injury was instantly felt after he got hurt in the fourth quarter on Sunday as it coincided with Detroit’s near-comeback. Our friend Kyle Posey from Niners Nation wrote the following: “Losing Verrett would be a massive blow, as he was comfortably one of the best players on the team. The Lions took advantage of the defense once Verrett went down, and Shanahan acknowledged as much.” The numbers also reflect this sentiment.

Just after the stroke of noon on Monday, fewer than 20 hours after the Eagles wrapped up an opening-day win over the Atlanta Falcons, a team meeting in the auditorium of the NovaCare Complex ended with widespread clapping and good tidings the message that everyone in the NFL understands: It’s now on to the San Francisco 49ers at Lincoln Financial Field, a game that will provide a different kind of test for Nick Sirianni and his team. He knows it all too well: The emotional pitch at which the Eagles played in beating Atlanta will have to be matched, at the very least, against an outstanding 49ers team coming off a big win at Detroit. San Francisco is spending the week in West Virginia rather than returning to the West Coast, hoping to save some travel energy to match what the Eagles’ crowd is going to bring to the table on Sunday afternoon. Hurts finished 27-of-35 for 264 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions with seven carries for 62 yards. By any measure, it was the best start of his career thus far. By TruMedia’s EPA per play, it was better than all but one game by an Eagles quarterback in all of 2020. If you were looking for improvement in a few specific areas from Hurts, you saw it. He avoided the turnovers that plagued him and the offense last season. He was more willing to throw the ball over the middle of the field and he never really tried to force something that wasn’t there. The only thing his game lacked was an explosive deep ball, but it’s fair to think that was by design. The only deep ball he tossed was an underthrown 28-yard completion to Ertz, and it looked like there was at least one play where he might have missed an open receiver downfield (Watkins streaked down the field wide open on one third down in the third quarter when pressure forced Hurts out of the pocket). According to Next Gen Stats, Hurts’ average intended air yards on Sunday afternoon was just 3.7, far and away the lowest number in the league.

1. Sirianni, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles aren’t going to be a disaster. You can breathe a sigh of relief. The Eagles aren’t going to be drafting first next spring. Sirianni isn’t going to be a one-year bust. And Hurts isn’t going to be benched by Week 4. Anything can happen from here on out, of course. The Eagles could get whacked by the 49ers next week. They could lose four of their next five in games they’re likely to be underdogs. There’s no bigger “Overreaction Monday” in the NFL than after the first week of games, and the Eagles aren’t suddenly Super Bowl contenders. But all that being said, they could be better than most had predicted, certainly more capable than the three-win bar some had set before the season. Here’s why: They played with energy, poise and a sense of purpose. The last three years, especially in 2020, there was hardly a game without a puzzling plan, call, or decision.

This was Hurts’ first game with Gainwell and Smith and only his fifth start with Reagor and Miles Sanders — who is still only 24 — and the chemistry they all showed together was electrifying.

NFC East: It was not exactly a banner weekend for last year’s worst division. The offense — It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day for the Giants’ offense. Thirteen points, including a meaningless final play of the game touchdown run by Daniel Jones, is not going to cut it. Saquon Barkley (10 carries, 26 yards) had no impact on the game. Devontae Booker (four carries, 7 yards) was even less productive. Kadarius Toney had -2 yards on two catches and played only 5 snaps. Daniel Jones fumbled for the 30th time in 28 career games, killing both a potential scoring drive and any real chance the Giants had of making a comeback. Jones foolishly took on a pair of Denver defenders rather than slide. Solder snd Peart were awful. Two of Kenny Golladay’s four catches came in the final five minutes with the game hopelessly out of reach.

What makes the loss against the Chargers sting so much is that Washington’s defense, who was touted as one of the best defenses in the NFL, could not get off the field. The Chargers won the time of possession by 13 minutes while converting 14 of 19 third-down attempts. That’s a 73 percent conversion rate, and if you take away the last third down attempt where Herbert kneeled to end the game, Washington gave up 14 of 18 third-down attempts (77 percent).
