Tony Romo Believes Eagles Could Be ‘Surprise’ Team, ‘Shock’ People – CBS Sports
Romo then took things one step further and, while acknowledging it would be an uphill battle to do so, the Eagles could “surprise” a lot of people. “I think the Eagles are going to be a surprise team. If you go in and think they’re really not ready, they could shock a lot of people and go 10-6 or 11-5 very quickly,” Romo said. “That’s an uphill battle right now but I still think they have a lot of talented players and the coaching staff is good. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Eagles have a great season this year.”

I think people are maybe underestimating them a bit. I don’t think they’re about to be great, but I saw an article that predicted the Eagles would come in last place in the division. I just think that’s not reflective of what’s most likely to happen. Now, you have a huge question right now at quarterback, so it’s much harder to predict in that circumstance than most, but I think there’s reason to be optimistic. The defense will be good, maybe even very good. Assuming they stay healthy, the defensive line is about as strong as they’ve had, other than maybe Super Bowl year, and that tends to dictate how the defense does. The offense is very hard to predict because some of it’s just going to depend on [Jalen] Hurts. They do have better weapons, if healthy, than they’ve had in a while, but guys that will be a lot better in a couple of years than they are now.

Jalen Hurts Will Have a QB Rating Under 85. And look, I really want to believe that Hurts is the franchise QB and that we’ll be able to use three first round picks next year at positions other than quarterback to truly bulk up this roster. But I’ve seen a lot of bold predictions out there proclaiming a 3,500+ yard season and 30+ combined touchdowns and, in my heart of hearts, I see a more up-and-down season and the likelihood that, while he will show flashes of promise, it won’t be enough to convince Howie Roseman to keep him as the franchise QB. It was pretty obvious from the team’s pursuit of DeShaun Watson this summer that the front office doesn’t believe Hurts is the guy. As much as anything else, that is why I’m pumping the brakes on a Hurts breakout season and think it’s more likely than not he struggles a bit in 2021.

Draft Hurts, people. The Eagles quarterback’s ADP has taken a nosedive over the past several weeks with the fear that Deshaun Watson would find his way to the City of Brotherly Love. However, Watson is still a member of the Houston Texans, which means there’s still time to hop back on the Hurts bandwagon. The second-year quarterback arguably offers the most upside because of the fantasy value he adds with his legs. In his four starts last season, he averaged 79.3 rushing yards and 12.6 rushes per game, which translated to 23.9 fantasy points per game, eighth-best among quarterbacks.

Hurts and Sanders were paired together for three games last season. (Sanders sat out the season finale against the Washington Football Team.) In those three games, Sanders averaged 103 yards from scrimmage while scoring three of his six rushing touchdowns. The threat Hurts presents as a runner keeps defenses honest. And Sanders saw improved efficiency as a pass-catcher, hauling in 69% of his targets from Hurts — well above his catch rate of 49% when former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was under center. “We have a lot of guys that have great opportunities to do special things this year. I think a lot of guys have taken huge steps. And Miles, you know he’s going to tote the rock, you know he’s going to catch the ball out of the backfield, and I’m excited to see what he does,” Hurts said. “He’s a big-time player, hard to tackle, he runs his tail off. At no time was Jack Stoll feeling comfortable in his quest to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster. Undrafted from Nebraska, Stoll joined a loaded tight end room with the sole intent of focusing on himself and not stepping back and thinking, “How in the world am I going to make this team?” It was all about Stoll being the best player he could be. “I’m one of these guys, I try not to be complacent,” said Stoll, now a member of the 53 after making the long shot journey of going from the after-draft neighborhood of players to the active roster. “I’m just trying to be the best version of myself that I can be. I’m just going out there every day trying to get better, making sure I’m tightening up my game, connecting with everyone, competing. Listen, I’ve always had the confidence that I’m an NFL-caliber tight end and it was awesome being able to go out there and prove it.”

“He presents a certain set of challenges when you’re doing against him for sure,” Gannon said Wednesday. “He’s mobile. He’s accurate. He’s a really good athlete. So, we always had to be aware of his skill set that’s a little bit different than other quarterbacks. Each quarterback has a different skill set and you just have to be aware of the challenges, who you are facing and what each guy presents. I always thought pretty highly of him.”

If there is solace in White’s absence, it’s that his legacy is very much alive. When J.J. Watt was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2011, Phillips was the head coach. He decided to play Watt on the edge because he remembered how well it worked for White to have one-on-one matchups with the offensive tackle. Any time an offense uses a slide protection, that’s a vestige of the invention bred by the necessity of trying to stop White. When a defensive player is penalized for landing on the quarterback with the full weight of his body, blame White. Whenever a player signs a big-ticket deal in free agency, they have White to thank. And then there’s the trickle-down effect of the lessons White imparted directly.

The one thing the Bengals did feel they had along the offensive line was depth at center. Trey Hopkins has graded very well per PFF since taking over for Price a couple of seasons ago. Cincinnati also drafted Trey Hill in Round 6 and apparently the Bengals like what they see. They took advantage of a position where they felt they had a surplus to add a player in B.J. Hill they think can help their defensive line. For what it’s worth, reports from NFL insiders were that Cincinnati had a number of teams in play for Smith. Sometimes players just need a change of scenery. I’m not sure that’s the case with Price, but evaluators I trust think he can still be a capable to above average center. He also has guard experience, and he is still only 26 years old. He provides better depth than the Giants had, and might even give them the option of moving Nick Gates if he shows them enough.

Concern: La’el Collins’ health. He is going to miss at least a couple of the practices for the Bucs game with a neck stinger. The staff has been very cautious with injuries since camp began, and this may be a continuation of that. But stingers can be a lingering problem. Collins missed the entire 2020 season with a hip injury, and his absence contributed to the dismal situation for the offensive line. Ty Nsekhe won the swing tackle job, but he was underwhelming during most of camp and the preseason games. Now the team may have to rely on him against the ferocious Tampa Bay defense. Unless and until Collins returns, and can play at a high level, we will absolutely worry.

Dustin Hopkins has had more headlines about him than any kicker should during the preseason this year. He missed 3 kicks over 3 games and fans are once again calling for his head. Washington drafted new long snapper Camaron Cheeseman and the specialists are still working on their timing. Ron Rivera has publicly backed Hopkins, saying he got hot last year after struggling, and talking about the timing/familiarity issues.
