The best and worst performances of the summer.

Now that Philadelphia Eagles training camp is over, it’s time to take a look back at the best and worst performers of the summer.

If you followed along with BGN Radio’s daily podcast coverage, you already know that Jimmy Kempski and I each gave out one MVP (most valuable player) point, one LVP (least valuable player) point, and one play of the day point after every single practice. Those points have been tallied for a final net score in the table below.

Notes:

  • No surprise to see Quez Watkins at the top. He had a fantastic camp. He began the summer as a third stringer and finished it as a top three receiver. Of the Eagles’ wideouts, he inspires the most confidence behind only DeVonta Smith. Watkins proved he can win in a number of ways. He burned defensive backs for deep catches. He proved more than capable of picking up yards after the catch. He made several impressive jump ball grabs. He ran crisp routes to shake defenders and create separation. He mostly avoided drops. It’ll be exciting to see what Watkins can do in the regular season.
  • Josh Sweat and Javon Hargrave earned their spots near the top by basically living in the backfield. Both players created a lot of disruption. Not impossible to think they can top their career single-season high in sacks. That’s six for Sweat and 6.5 for Hargrave.
  • Zech McPhearson looked better in practices than he did in the preseason games, which — to be clear — we did not give out points for. ZMP has seemingly worked his way up to be the top backup on the outside but we’ll see if the Eagles truly trust him in that role or if they’ll add another veteran.
  • Josiah Scott had a really good day of practice last Sunday that earned him two MVP points. Not necessarily a lock to make the team, though.
  • Nick Sirianni got one MVP point for the progress of the Eagles’ receivers and another for running a successful camp.
  • Jordan Mailata deserved more than one MVP point.
  • DeVonta Smith likely would’ve have more than one MVP point had he not been injured.
  • Jalen Reagor rebounded a bit after a bad start to camp but we still need to see him have consistent success in 11-on-11. His best work by far came in 1-on-1s. That he finished with three MVP points and two LVP points speaks to the highs and lows we might be able to expect from him. Nelson Agholor-esque.
  • Tyree Jackson deserved more than zero.
  • Jalen Hurts finished with a net zero after getting two MVP points and two LVP points.
  • Not good to see Miles Sanders towards the bottom of the table. He actually had a good camp as a runner but he dropped too many passes. There were also some other miscues in terms of a fumble or two and not knowing where to line up on one play. The feeling here is that Sanders will be a valuable contributor to the team in 2021 but there are still questions if he’s worth being signed to a long-term contract. Sanders is eligible for an extension at the end of this season.
  • Jake Elliott looks worse in this table than he should. He earned two LVP points after going 4/6 on field goal attempts early on in camp. Since that bad day, however, he’s been perfect. He didn’t earn any MVP points because it’s hard to give them to the kicker with other players shining brighter.
  • Wait. How did Carson Wentz get two LVP points if he’s not even on the team? Well, if you’ll recall, his injury situation early in camp seemed like bad news for the Eagles. So, he got LVP points for that. They also came on days when no Eagles players obviously stood out in a really bad way.
  • Travis Fulgham might make the roster but he sure didn’t have the summer that anyone would’ve liked to see out of him. Too many drops. Too many plays not made. His struggles also
  • Andre Dillard had an awful camp and didn’t do anything to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. The Eagles should really trade him for whatever they can get.

Here are the MVP/LVP breakdowns before net scoring was applied:

And here’s the play of the day table.

Notes:

  • More love for Watkins here.
  • Reagor racked up points in this category due to the two impressive one-handed catches he made in 1-on-1s.
  • This category is biased towards the offense so it’s especially impressive Hargrave showed up towards the top.
  • Do the Eagles keep Jack Stoll on the 53-man roster? He made some plays.
  • If you’re wondering about the halves, I split up points when there a play with a really good throw by the quarterback and a really good catch by the receiver.
