The History of Super Bowl Rematches

When the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles meet on Monday Night Football, it’ll mark just the eighth time a Super Bowl rematch will be played in the following regular season. So, to try and gain a little edge before using our ESPN Bet Promo Code, let’s take a look back at the history of Super Bowl rematches.

The first-ever Super Bowl rematch came in 1970, the first season after the NFL-AFL merger. The Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings played in Week 1. How better to kick off a merger than with the two best teams in the league going head to head?

The Vikings would avenge their Super Bowl loss in a major way in this one, taking out the defending champions, 27-10.

The next rematch wouldn’t take place until 1977. Once again, it was the Vikings, as they took on the defending champion Oakland Raiders.

Unlike 1970, the Vikings didn’t get their revenge in this one. After a 32-14 win in Super Bowl 11, the rematch was essentially the same as the Raiders dominated the Vikings en route to a 35-13 victory in the rematch.

There wouldn’t be another rematch for 16 years, but the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys broke the streak in 1993. After the Cowboys embarrassed the Bills in Super Bowl 27, by a final of 52-17, there’s no doubt the Bills wanted revenge.

They got it with a 13-10 win in Week 2 of the 1993 season. Of course, these two teams would meet in the Super Bowl again later that season. (This is the only time in NFL history a Super Bowl rematch has also been a Super Bowl preview.)

In 1997, it was the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots who went head to head. After Brett Favre won his first—and only—Super Bowl, he followed it up by dominating his opponents in the rematch the next season.

It was a brutal 28-10 win for Green Bay that day, as it shut down the pre-Tom Brady and Bill Belichick Patriots.

After a 17-year wait, the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks would break the Super Bowl rematch drought in 2014. After a dominant showing in Super Bowl 46 from the Seahawks, much of the same was expected during the 2014 regular season.

Instead, the two teams played an overtime thriller that saw the Seahawks come out on top, despite blowing a two-score fourth-quarter lead.

The Broncos would do it again when they took on the Carolina Panthers in a rematch of Super Bowl 50 in 2016. The Broncos had come out on top in the Super Bowl thanks to their defense. However, it would be their offense that overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to pull out a Week 1 win in the rematch.

And in 2017, the Atlanta Falcons and Patriots played a rematch that the former wishes to forget. After their epic Super Bowl collapse, the Falcons didn’t even put up a fight in the 2017 regular season. They trailed 23-0 before limping to a 23-7 defeat against New England.

In total, that makes defending Super Bowl champions 5-2 in regular season rematches. No team has avenged a Super Bowl the next season since 1993.

All of this is good news for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs time this around.
