Final Score: Jets 12, Giants 7

In the first game of the Robert Saleh era, the New York Jets scrubs beat the New York Giants scrubs 12 – 7.

In a game that featured the debuts of a brand new coaching staff and a brand new quarterback for the New York Jets, the early returns were mostly positive.

The Jets defense dominated for the most part, the Jets running game was solid, Zach Wilson was effective in a conservative debut, and the result was a victory to open the new era of Jets football.

As advertised, the Jets front four dominated early, exerting heavy pressure on Giants quarterback Mike Glennon to force a three and out. Bryce Huff had a sack early on, and one later in the game.

When the Jets took over on offense, Zach Wilson moved the ball effectively in a ball control offense. Mixing a solid running game with short and mid range passes, the Jets marched down the field and kicked a field goal to take an early 3 – 0 lead. Wilson got the ball back after a stalled Giants drive and moved the ball well again before the drive stalled in Giants territory.

After two drives the night was over for Zach Wilson and most of the other starters, and the rest of the game was a struggle among backups for both teams. Wilson finished 6 for 9 good for 63 passing yards and 3 points. It wasn’t a dominant effort, but Wilson and the Jets offense were efficient and fairly effective running a conservative, ball control offense.

The rest of the night featured a ferocious Jets pass rush dominating the Giants offensive line, some excellent play by beleaguered Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims, some shaky play by the Jets secondary, and two Jets backup quarterbacks who did not look ready for NFL action. Rookie defensive lineman Johnathan Marshall and second year man Bryce Huff shone with a couple of sacks each.

In the end the Jets won the Snoopy Bowl 12 – 7, with the Giants last drive ended by a sack by Marshall for a safety in the end zone.

With the win the Robert Saleh Jets start off a new era of football on the winning side for a change.
