Former Bears HC Matt Nagy joining Chiefs in assistant role

Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy is going back to his old stomping grounds.

Nagy is rejoining Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs as a senior assistant/quarterbacks coach. The news was first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Nagy replaces Mike Kafka, who recently became the new offensive coordinator for the New York Giants.

Prior to becoming the Bears head coach in 2018, Nagy spent his entire coaching career working under Reid. He was an assistant and quality control coach with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2010-2012 and followed Reid to Kansas City in 2013.

He was the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach from 2013-2016, before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2016, where he held that role for two seasons. Nagy now reunites with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who he vetted and helped develop during his rookie season in 2017.

Nagy, along with general manager Ryan Pace, was fired from the Bears in January after a dismal 2021 season in which they finished 6-11. In four years as the head coach, he took the team to two playoff berths and had a record of 34-31 in the regular season.

He only had one season under .500, but failed to develop any of the quarterbacks on the roster during his tenure, most notably Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields. His offenses also ranked near the bottom of the league in his last three years.
