Former Bucs wide receiver Mike Williams has died in a tragic accident at a construction site. Williams, who played at Syracuse before being drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, was 36 years old when he passed away from his injuries.

Buffalo Bills beat reporter Jon Scott reported the news on Tuesday night via X.

Williams came close to posting a pair of 1,000-yard seasons with the Bucs catching passes from former quarterbacks Byron Leftwich and Josh Freeman. He had a breakout rookie season in 2010 setting a franchise record with 11 touchdown receptions and posting 964 yards. That made Williams a finalist for the NFL Pepsi Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Following a slightly down year in which he caught 65 passes for 771 yards and three touchdowns in 2011, Mike Williams rebounded with 996 yards on 63 receptions with nine touchdowns the following season. But the 2013 season would be his last as he played in just six games and had 22 catches for 216 yards and two scores before being traded to Buffalo for a sixth-round pick.

Williams played three and a half years with Tampa Bay before playing part of one season in Buffalo for the Bills, his childhood team growing up. He had just eight catches for 142 yards and one touchdown before leaving the NFL to focus on a rap career that some say derailed his pro football career.

Excessive partying in Tampa is what led former general manager Mark Dominik to trade Williams to Buffalo.

Williams is the second former prominent Bucs receiver to die in recent years. Vincent Jackson tragically passed away in 2021 at age 38.
