Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith to become television analyst in 2021

The recently-retired Smith is going to give broadcasting a shot.

According to a new report from the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has signed on with ESPN to be an NFL analyst this season.

This doesn’t mean that we’ll hear Smith do color commentary on Chiefs games — at least not yet. According to Marchand, he will be used “across ESPN shows.”

He will appear on shows like “Monday Night NFL Countdown”, among others. However, if both sides like how it goes, it could lead to a larger commitment.

Smith had previously tried out for similar positions at both FOX and CBS — but both of those networks decided that Smith was not their guy for the moment.

As a former first-overall draft pick who spent 16 seasons playing for the San Francisco 49ers, Chiefs and Washington Football Team before he retired earlier this year, Smith is uniquely qualified to provide NFL insight — and during his time in Kansas City, we learned he could be pretty good on camera, too.

He will be joining what is starting to be a fairly substantial list of former Chiefs quarterbacks who have had television careers after football — including Len Dawson, Trent Green and Rich Gannon.
