Ex-Patriots running back Dion Lewis reportedly retires from the NFL

After 10 years in the NFL, former New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis is reportedly calling it a career. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 30-year-old will step away from the game “despite interest from teams as recently as last week.”

Lewis originally entered the league as a fifth-round draft pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. Initially serving as a depth running back for the Philadelphia Eagles, Lewis was later traded to he Cleveland Browns. However, he neither found any success in Cleveland nor after the Indianapolis Colts picked him up for one week in 2014.

After being out of football during the 2014 season, Lewis joined the Patriots and became a key member of their offensive attack. Signing a two-year contract extension after just three games, he was an electrifying runner. Unfortunately, however, a torn ACL ended his first season in New England prematurely.

Lewis did not have the same impact after his return the following year, but he still helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl. One year later, he was back as New England’s RB1 and had the most productive season of his career: playing in all 19 of the team’s games, he touched the football 261 times for 1,356 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Following the 2017 season, Lewis left New England to join the Tennessee Titans. He later also spent time with the New York Giants.

All in all, Lewis ends his career having played 102 regular season and 9 playoff games. A combined 36 of those games came with the Patriots.
