Former Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp dies at 58

Longtime NFL assistant coach Greg Knapp has sadly succumbed to injuries sustained after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle.

Last weekend, Knapp was hospitalized after he was struck by a motorist near his home in Danville, California. The driver reportedly swerved into the bike lane and hit Knapp, then tried to render aid after hitting him. Police said the unidentified person is cooperating with authorities and that a preliminary investigation did not find drugs or alcohol to be a factor in the crash.

Knapp was best known for being the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons. He got to work with Jeff Garcia during his best seasons and ran the offense when Michael Vick and the Falcons reached the NFC Championship Game in 2004.

When the Seahawks hired Jim Mora as head coach in 2009, he chose Knapp (whom he worked with in San Francisco and Atlanta) as the new OC. One of the bright spots of the season was the “Senecat” trick play on opening day against the St. Louis Rams.

After his one season with Seattle, Knapp landed jobs in Houston and (returned to) Oakland before winning a Super Bowl in 2015 with the Denver Broncos as the team’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Knapp returned to Atlanta for three seasons as their QBs coach and was hired by the New York Jets this offseason to be their pass game specialist, but his life has been tragically cut short.

Greg Knapp was just 58 years old and is survived by his wife Charlotte, along with his children Jordan, Natalie, and Camille.
