We’re just over two weeks away from the 2024 NFL draft taking the spotlight in Detriot for three days. And while the Houston Texans don’t have a first-round pick, that doesn’t mean they can’t land a Day 1 starter or two in the second round.

Houston’s built to win now. Headlined by a breakout season from Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud, the Texans are looking to build off their AFC South champion run and end their drought of making it to the conference title game. Stroud, who became the fifth passer in league history to throw for over 4,000 yards as a rookie, will be faced with added pressure as a rising star under center.

On paper, Stroud has an exceptional supporting cast. Nico Collins is coming off a breakout season where he finished top-10 in receiving yards. Rookie Tank Dell should be cleared for all offseason workouts after suffering a fractured fibula in December. Meanwhile, Nick Caserio invested in his star passer on a rookie deal by adding a bit more fuel to the offense with the acquisitions of Pro Bowlers Joe Mixon and Stefon Diggs.

There’s little reason to believe Houston won’t be back in the postseason, but the same thing was said about Jacksonville following a stellar campaign from Trevor Lawerence. The Texans aren’t looking to pick up a first-place schedule and a few more Ls in 2024, so everything starts with the draft.

Houston has nine picks to play with starting on Day 2, and only a handful of immediate needs to target. Since the draft is the talk of the internet, let’s do a seven-round mock to spice up conversations leading up to pick No. 42. The parameters are:

–The picks are based on players who fit the current formations for immediate results since Houston is going all-in this year, not necessarily the selections I would make in the given spots

–No trades. I know Caserio gets anxious sitting around but doing a seven-round mock is already a challenge in itself.

– Not everyone is going to be happy about every pick. Accept it. Embrace it. Feel free to call me out on Twitter and hit the follow button if you have a problem with the pick.

Alright, enough of my nonsensical rambling. Green Bay just made the pick and Houston’s on the clock.
