Giants 2021 roster profile: Defensive back Montre Hartage

Will the Giants, with a deeper secondary, need that insurance again in 2021?</p> <p id="wAF1rN">Let’s take a closer look as we continue profiling each of the 90 players the Giants will bring to training camp this summer.</p> <h2 id="wag5FC">The basics</h2> <p id="esUf18"><strong>Height:</strong> 6-foot<br><strong>Weight: </strong>190<br><strong>Age:</strong> Turns 24 on June 16<br><strong>Position: </strong>Defensive back<br><strong>Experience:</strong> 2<br><strong>Contract:</strong> Year 1 of two-year, $1.8365 million contract | <strong>Guaranteed:</strong> $1,500 | <strong>2021 salary cap hit: </strong>$850,750</p> <h2 id="bVmyA0">Career to date </h2> <p id="Glywsq">An undrafted free agent cornerback out of Northwestern, Hartage landed on the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad, where he worked to convert to safety. Hartage ended up appearing in four games for Miami near the end of the season, playing 98 defensive snaps.</p> <p id="sWIVWP">The Giants claimed Hartage off waivers from Miami last April.</p> <p id="5Ytgi2">Counting the Giants waiver claim of him and the team waiving him injured at the beginning of the season, Hartage appeared in an absurd 17 transactions for the Giants last season as he bounced from 90-man roster to IR to waived to practice squad to active roster to jobless and back to the practice squad, active roster and jobless again.</p> <p id="0Ot4tr">In all that yo-yoing Hartage appeared in two games. He played 21 defensive snaps, and none on special teams.</p> <h2 id="E4C9iL">2021 outlook </h2> <p id="GcNiIv">Hartage is obviously a player Graham likes. He is obviously, though, limited by 4.68 40-yard dash speed that lands in the second percentile and other <a href="https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/montre-hartage">below-average athletic traits</a>.</p> <p id="DPJhmY">The Giants have Logan Ryan, Xavier McKinney, Jabrill Peppers and Julian Love ahead of Hartage at safety. They also have a stable of players competing for roles as backup cornerbacks, a competition Hartage’s limited athleticism would seem to preclude him from being part of.</p> <p id="E8tyCy">Hartage’s most likely path to sticking around is to once again land on the practice squad as an insurance policy against injury.</p></div>
