Is there a place on the Giants for the veteran offensive lineman?

Good offensive line depth is always valuable, and teams often turn to veteran players trying to extend their NFL careers trying to find it. Kenny Wiggins, who spent about 10 days on the active roster for the New York Giants last season, is one such player.

Could Wiggins find a place with the Giants in 2021. Let’s take a look as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp.

The basics

Height: 6-foot-6
Weight: 315
Age: 33 on Aug. 8
Position: Guard
Experience: 10
Contract: One-year, $1.0785 million | Guaranteed: $3,500 | 2021 cap hit: $853,500

Career to date

Wiggins has played 3,200 snaps with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions over the course of an NFL career that began in 2011.

Wiggins actually did not get on the field until playing a single special teams snap with the Chargers in 2014. Prior to that he had been with the practice squads of the San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Chargers.

From 2015-17 he played in 44 games with 25 starts for the Chargers, including starting all 16 games in 2017.

Wiggins signed with the Detroit Lions in 2018, starting 10 of 16 games. He was a reserve in 2019 and 2020, until being cut by Detroit after four games.

He landed on the Giants’ practice squad when Will Hernandez was placed on the COVID-19 Reserve list.

Wiggins has primarily played guard throughout his career, but does have a smattering of snaps played at both left and right tackle.

2021 outlook

Most likely the Giants see Wiggins as a Chad Slade-type of insurance policy. Maybe he sneaks onto the 53-man roster as a veteran backup. More likely, should expanded practice squads once again be in place, as expected, Wiggins could land on the practice squad.
