Giants elevate QB Davis Webb, DT Jack Heflin for game vs. Eagles

New York appears to be setting itself up to rest several starters on Sunday

The New York Giants will elevate quarterback Davis Webb and defensive tackle Jack Heflin from the practice squad to the game day roster for Sunday’s season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Those moves are likely an indication that the Giants plan to either rest players like quarterback Daniel Jones, running back Saquon Barkley, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and a few others entirely, or play them for only a handful of snaps.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post is reporting that Webb, a 2017 third-round pick by the Giants who has yet to throw an NFL pass, is expected to start.

The Giants, win or lose, are locked in as the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs.

Mike Garafolo reported on Saturday that the Miami Dolphins tried to sign Webb off the Giants’ practice squad this week to back up Skylar Thompson in their season finale. Webb chose to stay with the Giants.

Heflin was cut from the practice squad earlier in the week, but was brought back on Friday with Vernon Butler, who had reportedly missed practices this week with an illness, let go. Leonard Williams has already been ruled out and Heflin’s elevation is perhaps an indication that Dexter Lawrence will play little, if at all. Heflin appeared in four games last season for the Green Bay Packers.

The Eagles have also made several moves to bolster their roster for a game on Sunday they have to win to guarantee securing the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. First, the Eagles announced that starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, out the past two games with a right shoulder injury, has been cleared and will play. The Eagles also activated safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and defensive end Robert Quinn from injured reserve.
