Majority of voters in our poll opt for rest over rivalry

It is sounding more and more like coach Brian Daboll is intending to rest as many key players as possible in Sunday’s season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With the Giants locked in as the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs regardless of Sunday’s outcome, that is a decision Giants fans appear to agree with. In our poll earlier this week, 56 percent of those who voted said the Giants should rest starters.

Daboll said he would “do what’s best for the team” in his view.

“It’s only right if it works,” Daboll said. “So, if you do one thing and it doesn’t work, you do the other thing and something happens, you’re wrong no matter what. So, you just got to make a good decision based on information and the things you talk about with the people on your staff and make the decision that you think is right for your team. So, if you go out there and lay an egg, it’s the wrong decision. If you win, it’s the right decision.”

Let’s look at some of the comments.

Those who want Daboll to rest Saquon Barkley, Daniel Jones, Leonard Williams, Dexter Lawrence, Azeez Ojulari and maybe a few others believe that the Giants’ regular-season work is done. That health matters most heading into Wild-Card Weekend.

There are some strong objections to the idea of resting players, mostly generated from hatred of the Eagles and the Tom Coughlin decision in 2007.

‘SB Nation Reacts’ polling

In this week’s ‘SB Nation Reacts’ polling, we asked three Giants-specific questions.

Ninety-four percent of ‘Reacts’ voters hope the Giants’ first-round playoff opponent is the Minnesota Vikings rather than the San Francisco 49ers.

Minnesota obtains the 3 seed with:

MIN loss
OR
MIN tie + SF tie
OR
SF win

San Francisco obtains the 3 seed with:

SF loss + MIN win/tie
OR
SF tie + MIN win

Almost all Giants fans believe Joe Schoen’s first year as GM has been highly successful, with 68 percent giving him an ‘A’ grade and 38 percent giving him a ‘B.’

In the weekly confidence poll, 97 percent of voters are confident in the direction of the team, which has qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
