New York Giants news for Thursday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Wink Martindale, Giants officially part ways

The Wink Martindale-New York Giants standoff is reportedly over. Per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants and Martindale have “mutually parted ways.” The team confirmed the move on its website just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Per Raanan, Martindale will be free to become a defensive coordinator elsewhere next season “without restrictions.” The Giants will keep the $3 million Martindale would have been paid under the final year of his contract.

Thus ends the saga of a contentious relationship between Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll.

If the past decade of New York Giants offensive lines has taught us anything, it’s to be certain that assembling the second-worst unit in NFL history isn’t the same as reaching rock bottom.

Top 2024 Free-Agency Target: OL Mike Onwenu, New England Patriots

Onwenu should top Joe Schoen’s list in free agency. The 26-year-old has experience lining up at both guard spots and right tackle during his four years in New England. Also, he’s been a quality player at each position, earning a good grade from Pro Football Focus every year of his career.

24. Deonte Banks, CB, Giants

Banks was fine as a rookie despite playing in a Giants scheme that wasn’t an ideal fit for his game. Once New York played more zone coverage, however, the Maryland product showed why he was a first-round pick. Overall, he allowed 55.2% pass completion and a 79.6 passer rating when targeted. The 23-year-old finished with 64 tackles, 11 pass breakups, and two INTs, the most among 2023 first-round rookies.

Deonte Banks has a well-earned reputation as a man-to-man coverage cornerback.

And defensive coordinator Wink Martindale loves playing man coverage.

2024 NFL Draft: Updated team fits for the top quarterback prospects | PFF

If the Giants have a shot at LSU’s Jayden Daniels, they should take it. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner was electric this season. He finished 2023 with a 94.7 overall PFF grade, a 92.0 PFF passing grade and a 92.4 PFF rushing grade. He posted 29 big-time throws and 41 explosive rushes (10 yards or more). He would be the dual-threat player on a rookie contract who could help accelerate their team building.

6. New York Giants: Brock Bowers TE. The Giants simply go best player available, and in Bowers they get a three-down tight end who has a direct positive impact on the quarterback for the Giants.

6. New York Giants: Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame

As tempting as this WR class is, the Giants have to give Daniel Jones (or any quarterback who stands back there) more help — again. Alt (6-7, 322) will be OT1 on some boards after a fantastic junior season with the Irish. He still moves like the 220-pound tight end he was in high school.
