New York Giants news for Tuesday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Giants add three candidates to search for next defensive coordinator

The New York Giants have added three candidates to the list of coaches being considered to become their next defensive coordinator, including one candidate who has been on the staff the last couple of years.

Giants’ defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson has been considered a possibility should the Giants want to look internally to provide continuity for players. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan is now reporting that Henderson has officially become a candidate.

The Giants requested permission to interview Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley for the job that opened in New York when Wink Martindale and the Giants parted ways last week. And Tom Pelissero reported that the Giants have asked to speak with Anthony Campanile, linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins, about the defensive coordinator position.

The truth behind Brian Daboll, Wink Martindale, Mike Kafka and the Giants’ drama | New York Daily News

In a deep dive into the deteriorating situation in East Rutherford, Pat Leonard revealed several new details, including Daboll placing blame for the poor offensive performance on other coordinators and a complete refusal to accept any blame for the regression in 2023.

Leonard reveals that Daboll repeatedly took over play-calling, often losing his temper with coordinators for doing what he asked, all while deflecting any responsibility.

New Giants offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo facing steep challenge in New York | The Athletic

In Las Vegas, beyond team meetings and film sessions, Bricillo mandated in 2022 that his offensive line meet as a group daily after scheduled team activities to get in extra work, The Athletic’s Tashan Reed reported. Most linemen were tasked with learning multiple positions that first season, which helped them feel comfortable when lining up in different spots and next to different players.

“I’ve always had a saying that I think applies, which is, ‘Doing just what’s expected isn’t enough,’” said Bricillo. “They bought into that philosophy and that approach, and if they’re doing extra on their own, that’s great.”

Dexter Lawrence’s Continued Ascension

There was no better defensive tackle than Dexter Lawrence in 2023. For the past two years, Lawrence has taken the leap from a solid starter to an All-Pro-caliber player, and his 93.0 grade in 2023 reflects that. Lawrence’s jump stemmed from his increased pass-rushing success. His 92.6 pass-rushing grade was the highest among all interior defenders this season, and although he managed only 4.5 sacks, he was a constant presence in the backfield.

New York Giants Final Rookie Report: Mixed Bag | Sports Illustrated

Of the seven draft picks, only two, cornerback Deonte Banks and center John Michael Schmitz, turned into starters. Receiver Jalin Hyatt, whom the Giants traded up for to get in the third round, showed flashes of promise but, for some reason, wasn’t as featured as heavily down the stretch as one might have thought would be the case.

No. 6, New York Giants: Jayden Daniels QB. No player did more for their draft stock in the fall than Jayden Daniels, who went from possible Day 3 pick to first-round prospect. He reminds me of Lamar Jackson, and the Giants aren’t tied to Daniel Jones beyond the 2024 season.

Norm Snead, former Giants Pro Bowl quarterback, dead at 84 | New York Post

Norm Snead, the quarterback who made four Pro Bowls in his 16-season NFL career, including 1972 with the Giants, died Sunday in Naples, Fla. He was 84.

After playing sparingly in Minnesota, the Giants acquired Snead for Fran Tarkenton. Snead went 8-5 as a starter in 1972, leading the league in completion percentage and throwing more touchdowns than interceptions for the first time in five years.
