New York Giants news for Wednesday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Daniel Jones has to be the Giants’ quarterback once he is healthy

BBV’s Ed Valentine explains that Daniel Jones should be the New York Giants’ starting quarterback once he is healthy enough to play.

In Ed’s view, despite any interpretation of head coach Brian Daboll’s comments on Sunday or the idea that the offense has looked better with Tyrod Taylor behind center, there is no other decision that makes sense.

Going back to his ‘building, not built’ column posted a week ago, the future matters more for the Giants than the present, although you will never get Daboll to admit it. Getting all of the information they can to make some of the important personnel decisions they have to make is, ultimately, more important than whatever their won-loss record turns out to be this season. And Daniel Jones is at the top of that list

Other Giant observations

Giants’ Jalin Hyatt showing why Joe Schoen traded up for him. But can he crack Jets’ secondary? | NJ.com

Jalin Hyatt was always going to be the most intriguing player Joe Schoen drafted this year.

Yes, Schoen — the Giants’ second-year general manager — picked two immediate starters in the first two rounds (cornerback Deonte Banks and center John Michael Schmitz).

Giants’ defense uncovers ‘nasty mentality’ after early struggles

With games against the Jets (ranked No. 30 in total offense) on Sunday followed by the Raiders (No. 30 in scoring offense) on deck, the defense could be on the cusp of a season-turning stretch under coordinator Wink Martindale.

“One thing Wink always says that I love is, ‘We always hold the pen last,’ ” defensive tackle Leonard Williams said. “And I like that mindset because even if offenses are audibling, checking or motioning or anything like that, we feel like we have the pen last and we are going to make them do what we want them to do.”

The Commanders kept extra blockers in to protect, but they struggled to identify who would blitz and who would drop in coverage. Add in defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence registering a season-high eight pressures up the middle, and it’s no wonder that it was nearly impossible for Washington to operate. The Giants tallied six sacks Sunday after registering a league-low five sacks in the first six games.

Deonte Banks nominated for Rookie of the Week | Giants.com

Cornerback Deonte Banks has been nominated for the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Giants’ Week 7 win over the Washington Commanders. Banks registered the first interception of his NFL career while adding a season-high seven total tackles (five solo).

CB Deonte Banks

Overall Rookie Grade: 56.2 (Rank: 11/17); Week 7 Grade: 58.2

Banks certainly isn’t the best cornerback in football, but he may be the most fun to watch. He was terrific in the first half against Washington, allowing just one catch for eight yards and reeling in a terrific interception where he baited a pass into his deep-third coverage. There were struggles later in the game as Washington featured Terry McLaurin more, but Banks continues to fight through tough assignments every week.

NY Giants takeaways: ‘Talk is cheap’ memories for NY Jets Week | The Record

We’re not going to get the showdown between Aaron Rodgers and Giants outside linebacker Jihad Ward after their preseason verbal tussle, and Ward was the one who offered what undoubtedly will be Daboll’s message this week in a game that you know both organizations want badly.

“We’re growing,” Ward said. “We’re not talking. We’re just doing what we’ve got to do.”

Evan: The slander of Giants Kayvon Thibodeaux needs to stop | WFAN.com

WFAN’s Evan Roberts says criticisms of Thibodeaux need to stop, and at this point, are simply misguided.

“Despite him dropping a pick six, which naturally is going to get all of the attention in the world, Kayvon Thibodeaux, over the last four weeks, has been getting his ass to the quarterback. Isn’t that what we all want? Instead of talking about him as a bust…he’s doing what you drafted him for. He’s getting to the quarterback.

“Maybe it’s because Kayvon is flashy and talks a big game. But if you watch him over the last five weeks, he’s finally doing what every Giant fans was screaming about what he wasn’t doing over the first few weeks, which is hitting the quarterback.”

New York Jets Breece Hall One Year After Torn ACL Says He Worked His Tail Off to Get Where He Is Today | NewYorkJets.com

“I had no idea today was the day until I think one of my trainers had told me and I was like, ‘Oh, that is crazy,’ ” Hall said. “I really wasn’t even thinking about it or it hadn’t crossed my mind or anything. But it has been a crazy year, ups and downs, frustrations, tears, everything. Just prayed throughout the whole process, worked my tail off and I am here today.”

In Week 5, Hall set a career-high with 177 yards rushing against Denver and has brought a spark to the Jets locker room.

Jets activate DB Jarrick Bernard-Converse | Pro Football Talk

The Jets opened a roster spot when they traded wide receiver Mecole Hardman to the Chiefs last week and they filled it on Tuesday. The team announced that they have activates sixth-round pick Jarrick Bernard-Converse from the physically unable to perform list. Bernard-Converse returned to practice three weeks ago, so the defensive back was just about at the end of the 21-day window to be activated or shut down for the year.

Aaron Rodgers: “I’d love to come back this season” | Pro Football Talk

“Listen, I’d love to come back this season,” Rodgers said on ESPN’s ManningCast. “I think for me you always have to set a goal, otherwise you go kind of crazy. And so the goal is to definitely come back. But there’s a lot of factors that go into that. But I’ve got to get to the point where I can protect myself and do what I do.”
