New York Giants news for Thanksgiving Day

Good morning, New York Giants (+3.5) fans!

Giants-Patriots Week 12 storylines: Tommy DeVito, Bill Belichick, draft order, more

Tommy Devito is the toast of New York and New Jersey after playing the game of his life on Sunday to lead the Giants to an upset victory over the Washington Commanders (+12.5). Was that DeVito’s 15 minutes of fame, or can he do it again this Sunday and show that perhaps he could become at least a viable NFL backup quarterback?

DeVito’s 137.7 passer rating Sunday against Washington (18 of 26, 249 yards, 3 TDs) was the highest by a rookie free agent quarterback with 15+ attempts in common draft era (1967).

The question is: Can he do it against a Bill Belichick that is famous for confusing young quarterbacks?

NFL allowed to flex Monday night games for first time ever: Here’s the one game most likely to get switched | CBSSports.com

According to North, the game most likely to be flexed will come in Week 14, when the Giants play host to the Packers as part of a Monday night doubleheader.

The problem with moving the game is that the Jets play at home on Sunday afternoon, so the NFL can’t simply move the Giants to Sunday since the two teams share a stadium. The way to solve that problem would be to have the two teams flip games. In that situation, the Giants would take the 1 p.m. slot on Sunday that is currently occupied by the Jets, and the Jets would get the Monday night game.

Presser Points: Brian Daboll updates injuries for Week 12 | Giants.com

The Giants will move up the starting time of practice on Thanksgiving Day. Daboll discussed a few options with the captains last week, and that’s what they decided. “They wanted to keep it a normal week. So, we’ll push up the time that we start, and then they’ll get out a little bit earlier than they would. Fairly normal.”

Giants’ Brian Daboll on Deonte Banks profanely blasting Commanders, Terry McLaurin | NJ.com

Giants coach Brian Daboll said Wednesday he spoke to rookie cornerback Deonte Banks about his profane rant after Sunday’s win at the Commanders.

And while Daboll declined to detail that conversation, he did make it clear he wasn’t happy with Banks’ social media video.

Who would you rather be (revisited): The New York Giants or Minnesota Vikings? | The Athletic

We asked this same question about these strikingly similar teams in the offseason. With three more months of data, has your answer changed?

As the losses mount this season, it’s hard not to think about the woulda, coulda, shoulda of the typical rebuild process where teams typically struggle in Year 1 and then build from there. It’s too early to say how much last year’s success will set the Giants back in their build (if at all), but it will be interesting to track going forward.

Giants’ Tommy DeVito should start over healthy Tyrod Taylor | New York Post

If Tommy DeVito plays with the verve and efficiency he displayed last week in Washington, he should remain the New York Giants’ starting quarterback moving forward, even if Tyrod Taylor is healthy and ready to return.

Might Giants’ Saquon Barkley play his way into big-money contract (probably with another team) late in lost season? | NJ.com

When Giants running back Saquon Barkley suffered a high ankle sprain late in the Week 2 comeback win at the Cardinals, it seemed like his latest prove-it season was doomed.

But Barkley blasted through all the “here we go again” narratives about his durability. He missed just three games — and has performed mostly at a high level since he returned. And immediately upon his return, no less.

Giants’ win over Commanders further illustrates that Daniel Jones is not the long-term answer at QB | SNY.tv

Big Blue’s offense has struggled for much of Jones’ career. The Giants coaches and offensive linemen have taken the majority of the criticism for the poor offensive outputs, but after watching an undrafted rookie in his second start outperform your supposed franchise quarterback, it should be fairly obvious the Giants have a pressing need for a new lead man under center.

Kayvon Thibodeaux: Can NY Giants star challenge for NFL sack title? | The Record

Thibodeaux refused to let the moment pass (or celebrate it) without showing his appreciation for a teammate – All-Pro defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence – who he tagged and thanked in a post on his Instagram account.

“When you have great players alongside of you, it’s only right that you raise your level of play to theirs,” Thibodeaux told NorthJersey.com recently, speaking of Lawrence’s impact directly. “Dex has been playing great and he’s going to continue to play great and I want to continue to match him, so that we can be a great front and a great defense.”

This is…..not good

Every Team’s Most Important Remaining Game on the 2023 NFL Schedule | Bleacher Report

New York Giants: Week 12 vs. New England Patriots. In a quest for a primo draft pick, the Giants can’t afford to “accidentally” beat a two-win Patriots team at home Sunday afternoon.

New York Giants: Stop Winning. Look, everyone loves a Tommy DeVito feel-good story as much as the next guy, but if the Giants win one more game, their chances of securing a top quarterback, impact offensive tackle or Marvin Harrison Jr. go way down, especially since their strength of schedule is one of the highest of the teams currently picking in the top 10. Ideally, the Giants draft Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, but they’re already flirting with fire. You need a high-impact player at the top of this next draft to jumpstart a quick turnaround next season.

Mac Jones on starting Sunday: “I hope so — that’s the plan, I think” | Pro Football Talk

Jones added he’s had “good conversations” with Belichick about who’s starting at QB on Sunday and he’s focusing on controlling what he can. As a clarifying question, Jones was asked if it’s his plan or the team’s plan for him to start at quarterback, and Jones said, “We’ll see.”

Evaluating Bailey Zappe’s Chances to Start at Quarterback for the Pats vs. the Giants | Patriots.com

With ample opportunities earlier in the season to make a switch at quarterback, Zappe’s uninspiring play dating back to the summer hasn’t given the coaching staff much reason to make a change. In training camp, Zappe struggled to grasp a new system that’s mentally taxing for quarterbacks and was wildly inconsistent with his downfield accuracy. If there was a stealth quarterback competition, it wasn’t competitive because Zappe never pushed Jones for reps in August.

Every Team’s Most Important Remaining Game on the 2023 NFL Schedule | Bleacher Report

New England Patriots: Week 12 at New York Giants. If the 2-8 Pats drop this one coming off a bye, they could be contending for the top pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

How each NFL team should approach the rest of the 2023 season | PFF

New England Patriots: Caleb Williams Or Drake Maye no matter what. New England’s 2-8 record is a reflection of how poorly the roster is constructed. Their only goal moving forward should be to make sure that when the 2024 NFL Draft comes and goes, they have one of Caleb Williams or Drake Maye on their depth chart.
