New York Giants news for Friday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Giants fans think Tiki Barber belongs in Hall of Fame, and I agree

BBV’s Ed Valentine reconsiders Barber being a Hall of Famer and cites Terrell Davis as one precedent.

The former Denver Broncos great reached the Hall of Fame with only a seven-year career on his resume. Davis’s four great seasons came at the beginning of his career, two of them seasons of more than 2,000 total yards and one a pure 2,000-yard rushing season. Knee injuries wrecked his career, though, and he totaled only less than 1,300 yards from scrimmage his last three seasons combined.

In 10 years, Barber had just one season — 514 yards as a second-year player in 1998 — below 800 total yards from scrimmage for a season.

If Terrell Davis is a Hall of Famer, Tiki Barber should be one, too.

Other Giant observations

Tiki Barber just wants to be in Hall of Fame conversation | WFAN.com

“I think for quarterbacks and coaches, championships matter, but for running backs it’s really about getting in the room and letting them have the conversation about you,” Barber said (2:48 in player above). “I found this out last year when my brother got inducted. The only thing he wanted was to have them have the conversation about him. I’m not saying I deserve to be a Hall of Famer, it’s just talk about me, and the only way for that to happen is to get into the finals.”

Tommy DeVito spurned Commanders, Patriots to sign with Giants | New York Post

Tommy DeVito had already handed the Commanders and Patriots losses before beating them on the field these past two weeks.

DeVito spurned the Commanders after going undrafted, turning down “significantly more guaranteed money” in order to sign with the Giants. Then, during the period after the Giants waived DeVito before signing him to the practice squad, the Patriots tried to lure away DeVito but he stayed with his hometown team.

The DeVito legend is more than just being a star quarterback who won a state championship at New Jersey powerhouse Don Bosco Prep. It’s that he didn’t get selected in this year’s draft, latched onto the practice squad and wasn’t supposed to start this season since he was behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. But Jones and Taylor got injured, prompting DeVito into a starting role.

And, oh yeah, DeVito also embraces his Italian heritage and living home where he gets to eat his mom’s delicious chicken cutlets.

2023 NFL All-Youngster Team: Top players under 24 years old | ESPN.com

We built first- and second-team rosters of the NFL’s best under-24 players, from QB (C.J. Stroud) to defensive tackle (an elite Eagles duo). Kayvon Thibodeaux was selected as one of the two First-Team edge rushers.

“With high-end traits and juice off the ball, Thibodeaux has elevated his game this season after being the No. 5 pick in 2022,” ESPN’s Matt Bowen wrote. “His 11 sacks are eighth-most in the NFL, and he has also added 29 pressures. The tape tells us that he has developed a deeper set of counter moves in his second pro season, and the arrow is pointing up on his game.”

What if Giants wait until 2025 to take big swing at drafting Daniel Jones’ replacement? | NJ.com

Giants general manager Joe Schoen acknowledged the obvious this week: He needs to do something at quarterback next offseason.

And while he didn’t rule out drafting a quarterback high to replace Daniel Jones, the draft order might not work out in Schoen’s favor.

In truth, those on the inside were wary of a course correction in 2023. They suspected that they had not craftily vaulted over the normal rebuild hurdles and did not assume it was onward and upward with no reason to anticipate a stumble or two.

And then this season opened up and all the goodwill began escaping out of the balloon.

Giants legend explains WFAN resignation: ‘Not a platform I want to be on’ | NJ.com

“I’ve got nothing but love for Brandon. I don’t know Sal, but I respect his fandom, I respect his enthusiasm … Yes, it’s disrespectful to be hung up on. We had that conversation. But the realization to me is that that’s not a platform I want to be on. I think they speak facts a lot, but when you want to have a position on someone, and you want to ask me about it, and you tell me you haven’t seen that person, or you don’t watch that person. I’m like, ‘Well what are we talking about?’ Cause I’m going to tell you what he’s doing, and if you can only tell me what he’s not doing, then you’re not paying attention to what he’s doing.”
