New York Giants headlines for Monday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Offseason program begins Monday

The Giants begin Phase 1 of their offseason program on Monday. Players are allowed to be in a team facility for four hours each under the following Phase 1 conditions:

  • Two weeks | Limited to strength and conditioning activities (“dead ball”); only strength and conditioning coaches allowed on field*
  • 90 minute max on the field
  • Clubs can only specify 2 hours for players to be at the facility
  • Players choose the other 2 hours for weights, etc.

* Dead Ball Explanation:

-QBs can throw to receivers with no coverage

-Kickers and Punters can kick, but players cannot field the ball and no snappers or holders can be involved

-Long Snappers can snap into a net

-Defensive players may not catch balls at all regardless of who is throwing them.

The Giants will have media availability via Zoom beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET. Head coach Brian Daboll, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, defensive coordinator Shane Bowen and special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial will all speak to media. Select players will also be made available.

Rome Odunze’s immense talent could make him next great NY receiver | NY Post

“He will be eating New York out of his hands because he truly is a person who can handle all types,” Shephard said. “There’s a brute toughness to New York, and Rome has that. There’s also the glitz and glam. Guess what? He’s going to make those plays, too.”

The Giants underwent a significant change at running back this offseason. Saquon Barkley was allowed to test the free agent waters, leading to a lucrative contract with their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles. General manager Joe Schoen responded to Barkley’s departure by signing Devin Singletary to be the new feature back.

Singletary is a good, not great, pass catcher. Singletary’s best projection is as an early-down runner that’s spelled on third-and-obvious passing downs. Furthermore, Eric Gray struggled as a rookie, averaging 2.8 yards per carry. Gray also recorded just six receptions for 22 receiving yards. Schoen should add depth and competition. Shipley would be an ideal complement to Singletary’s between-the-tackles attitude.

Round 1: No. 6 overall: Drake Maye, QB, North Carolina
Round 2: No. 47 overall: Jaden Hicks, S, Washington State

If the Giants are truly looking to move on from Daniel Jones, then Maye’s strong arm, fearless attitude and thick overall build would be a welcome sight at MetLife Stadium. His strong physical presence could remind GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll of Josh Allen — both Schoen and Daboll were in the Bills organization when Allen arrived in Buffalo. Schoen signed Jalen Mills in free agency to help make up for the loss of Xavier McKinney, but the former Patriot could be used in a slot role, with Hicks playing in the box and deep at safety.

Brian Baldinger talks 2024 NFL Draft storylines | NY Post

I would not go after J.J. McCarthy. He might become a great pro. He’s just a very difficult guy to evaluate because of where he comes from. He’s the only quarterback I can remember in recent history where nobody says anything negative about him. They just say, “He’s 27-1, Jim Harbaugh says he’s the best quarterback in the draft.” Nobody says anything about the offense he played in, not throw the ball in the second half against Penn State, they don’t bring any of that up. They’re just like, “Yep, he was a five-star recruit in high school, he took Michigan to a national championship, back-to-back playoff seasons.“ Like he’s the Golden Child. Nobody ever says anything bad about him. And I can’t figure out what there is to evaluate with him. They asked very little of him to go win a national championship.
