Giants to get shut out of a QB in Round 1?

Tom Pelissero told the ‘Rich Eisen Show’ that the Giants are the “most likely” team of the ones commonly thought to be quarterback-needy (Bears, Commanders, Patriots, Vikings, Broncos, Raiders) to come out of Round without a quarterback.

“The Giants unless they move up will be the team that most likely gets beat,” Pelissero said.

When I write that the general manager can’t screw it up, I don’t mean that his job depends on getting it right for the Giants. Of course it does. I mean that he literally can’t screw it up. It is hard, given the Giants’ roster needs and the strength of this talent pool, to imagine a scenario in which he doesn’t get a player that will make an immediate impact.

Let’s face it: The team could pick one of its season ticket holders and, chances are, he or she would nail the No. 6 overall pick. Sometimes, being a GM is a complicated job. Given the likely scenarios, this does not appear to be one of those times. Schoen basically admitted as much during his pre-draft press conference on Thursday afternoon.

“I feel like we can go several different ways,” Schoen said, practically shrugging. “There are several different options that we can take, and we’re going to be okay. I’m comfortable where we are in terms of whatever we do.”

“Chargers and Cardinals are trying to sell high; high interest rate. Most teams I’ve talked to expect one of these two teams to trade back and it might be more momentum with the Chargers right now because they have a lot of needs trying to re-establish an identity under [new head coach] Jim Harbaugh. So, they’re looking to potentially move out. I’ve talked to teams who say they very much want to move out, maybe get an offensive lineman or a wide receiver later in the top 10-12 somewhere.

“The Cardinals still a threat there as well, but they could stay put. Some teams I’ve talked to believe they might just stay and take [Ohio State’s] Marvin Harrison [Jr.], who’s considered widely the best wide receiver in the draft. But you’ve got [LSU’s] Malik Nabers, you’ve got [Washington’s] Rome Odunze, all could go top 10, and both of these teams could end up with a wide receiver by the end of it.”

First-round slot: No. 6

The Giants have not hid their interest in considering a quarterback in this year’s draft — Daniel Jones struggled last season before tearing his ACL — but it’s far from a certainty that one of the top four passers will be there at pick No. 6. There are so many factors the Giants must consider if they are indeed intent on a QB in Round 1, not the least of which is the cost. It sounds steep, but I would imagine that if they engaged the Cardinals at No. 4, for instance, that Arizona would start things off by asking for a 2025 first-round pick to make the deal happen. That’s a lot to move up two spots but might be what it takes if New York wants a quarterback that badly.

Interestingly, only three times in the common draft era has a team traded into the top five for a QB on draft day, most recently the Bears for Mitchell Trubisky in 2017, per ESPN Stats & Information. And New York currently has six picks total this year, tied for the second fewest in the league.

Looking at what the Giants did in the first round of the 2019 draft is a perfect illustration of how hard drafting is. They took Daniel Jones, Lawrence and Baker that year in the first round. Lawrence has proven he is a keeper. Jones has been up and down and elicits many different opinions. Baker has not played a snap since 2021 in the NFL. All taken in one round of the draft.
