Kafka gets second interview in this hiring cycle

For a second consecutive offseason, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka appears to be popular on the head-coaching interview circuit.

Kafka interviewed for four head-coaching job s last offseason, but did not get one and returned to the Giants. Kafka has now received a second request to interview a head-coaching opening this offseason.

The Seattle Seahawks have requested permission to interview Kafka, per Adam Schefter. The Seahawks moved on from Pete Carroll at the end of the regular season. Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is also considered a leading candidate for the Seattle job.

Kafka also interviewed last week for the Tennessee Titans’ opening. The Titans fired head coach Mike Vrable after not making the playoffs.

Kafka has been the Giants’ offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. In 2022, he was lauded for his work with Daniel Jones and the offense as the Giants went 10-8-1, including winning a playoff game. In 2023, Jones regressed, then got hurt and the Giants finished 30th in the league in points per game at 15.6. There have also been reports of friction between Kafka and head coach Brian Daboll.

The Giants have already parted with special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. If Kafka were to leave, the Giants would end up with new coordinators for every group in 2024.
