New York’s receiving corps continues to take hits

Who will be available to catch passes from New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers is anyone’s guess. Wide receivers Kenny Golladay (knee) and Kadarius Toney (ankle) are out. So, too, is running back Saquon Barkley (ankle).

Several other Giants pass catchers are questionable.

Tight end Evan Engram is questionable with a calf injury. He missed two games earlier this season with a calf issue, and was a limited participant Friday after missing Thursday’s practice.

Wide receivers John Ross, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton are all questionable with hamstring injuries. Ross was on IR earlier this year with a hamstring issue. Slayton has missed three games with a hamstring. Shepard missed two games with a hamstring injury of his own, but returned Sunday and had 10 catches vs. the Los Angeles Rams.

Defensive tackle Danny Shelton (pectoral) is listed as doubtful.

THURSDAY

In an alarming development for the already injury-ravaged New York Giants, two more of their key play makers showed up on the team’s injury report on Thursday afternoon. Tight end Evan Engram, who missed two games this season with a calf injury, was listed as ‘did not practice’ with a calf injury. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who missed two games with a hamstring injury, was listed as ‘limited’ due to a hamstring issue.

No word from the Giants as to whether these might have been rest days for Engram and Shepard due to their previous injuries.

The Giants will already be without Saquon Barkley (ankle), wide receiver Kenny Golladay (knee) and wide receiver Kadarius Toney (ankle).

WEDNESDAY

Kadarius Toney is not expected to be placed on injured reserve due to his ankle injury, New York Giants coach Joe Judge told assembled media on Wednesday.

“We haven’t had any conversations that would lead to anything with IR,” Judge said.

Toney, the electrifying rookie wide receiver, injured his ankle during his breakout 10-catch, 189-yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5. He left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams after playing only six snaps, having aggravated the same injury.

A report earlier this week indicated that Toney would not play against Carolina. Judge was not willing to make that proclamation on Wednesday, saying only that Toney would work with trainers today.

Judge also said the same thing about running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) and wide receiver Kenny Golladay (knee). Both players missed the game against the Cowboys and are expected to miss Sunday’s game against Carolina, as well.

The Giants already placed starting left tackle Andrew Thomas (foot/ankle) on IR this week.

The good news on Wednesday was that, as expected, the Giants designated rookies Aaron Robinson and Elerson Smith to return. Both were to practice for the first time. Robinson, a cornerback, has been on PUP with a core muscle injury. Smith, an edge defender, has been on IR with a hamstring injury.

The Giants have 21 days to add them to the 53-man roster.
