Giants earn third victory of season with upset of Las Vegas

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants improved to 3-6 on Sunday with a 23-16 upset of the 5-3 Las Vegas Raiders at MetLife Stadium.

A Quincy Roche sack/fumble of Derek Carr recovered by Leonard Williams at the Giants’ 23-yard line with 37 seconds to play sealed the victory for New York.

Roche beat Las Vegas right tackle Brandon Parker and pried the ball loose from Carr. He said he had been attacking Parker with power most of the game, but went to a speed rush there.

“Wanted to give a changeup, wanted to switch it up,” Roche said. “I beat him around the edge.”

The Giants held a 23-16 lead after a Graham Gano 38-yard field goal with 3:21 to play. The Raiders drove to the Giants’ 13-yard line before the play by Roche and the recovery by Williams sealed the victory.

Xavier McKinney had two second-half interceptions for the Giants, one that he returned 41 yards for a touchdown and one that set the Giants up at midfield, leading to Gano’s final field goal.

The victory finished a difficult week for the Giants. They were playing on a short week after losing to the Kansa City Chiefs on Monday, then had an uncertain few days marked by a run of false-positive COVID-19 tests that made who would and would not be available to play uncertain late in the week.

“There were a lot of floating pieces this week,” said head coach Joe Judge. “We have a very resilient team, we have a very mentally tough team.”

• Daniel Jones completed 15 of 20 passes for only 110 yards with a 30-yard touchdown to Evan Engram. He was sacked twice and lost a fumble.
• Devontae Booker ran 21 times for 99 yards, losing a 100-yard game when he lost 3 yards on his final carry. Booker also had 3 receptions for 23 yards, finishing with 122 yards in total offense. Elijhaa Penny had 5 carries for 35 yards.
• Kyle Rudolph had a team-high 4 receptions, but only 20 receiving yards. Engram had 3 catches for 38 yards.
• McKinney had the 2 interceptions, a pair of passes defensed, and 7 tackles.
• Roche had the sack/fumble, the Giants’ only sack of the day, 2 of the Giants’ 3 quarterback hits, and 4 tackles.

The Giants trailed at the half, 13-10. They scored on their opening possession, when Daniel Jones hit Evan Engram for a 30-yard score to cap a seven-play, 75-yard drive. The Raiders responded with a 10-play, 73-yard drive culminating in a 2-yard pass from Derek Carr to Hunter Renfrow the tying score.

The Giants also got a 35-yard Graham Gano field goal, while the Raiders got 25 and 32-yard Daniel Carlson field goals for a 13-10 halftime lead.

Injury news

• Giants’ tight end Kaden Smith left the game in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. He was ruled out, though not officially diagnosed with a concussion.
• Devontae Booker left the game in the fourth quarter with a hip injury. He had 21 carries for 99 yards, and three catches for 23 more yards.

Ximines has seen limited playing time in recent weeks. What’s next?

The Giants have a Week 10 bye. In Week 11, they get a second Monday Night Football opportunity to go on the road and knock off a 2020 Super Bowl team. After narrowly missing a chance to upset the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8, the Giants travel to Raymond James Stadium in Week 11 for a Monday night clash with Tom Brady and the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Giants lost a Monday night game to Tampa Bay last season, 25-23.
