New York Giants headlines for Tuesday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Top underrated NFC players on verge of big paydays: Cardinals’ Chase Edmonds among breakout candidates – CBS Sports

Darius Slayton is one of four wide receivers on the list.

The G-Men may have paid Kenny Golladay and drafted Kadarius Toney because they don’t believe Slayton alone — or in tandem with Sterling Shepard — can headline the WR corps. But he still probably doesn’t get enough credit for his upside as a No. 2/3, having topped 700 yards and 15 yards per catch in each of his first two years.

A.J. Green to the Cardinals? Matt Ryan’s altered Falcons deal? The worst offseason moves for all 32 NFL teams – The Athletic

It’s a good thing that Dan Duggan couldn’t find a specific move to point to as “the worst.” It’s not a good thing that his comments about the offensive line are entirely valid.

It’s too early to call this the “worst” move, but neglecting the offensive line was easily the most surprising decision of the offseason. The Giants dumped their most dependable offensive lineman, Kevin Zeitler, for cap purposes. That left an unproven group that experienced some growing pains last season. The Giants made only depth signings in free agency and didn’t select a single lineman in the draft. The franchise is comfortable with the young group that’s in place. That’s a gamble that may pay off. But it would be easier to share that optimism if the Giants had invested in a proven commodity in free agency or drafted a lineman with upside.

The Biggest Looming Decision for Every NFL Team Before 2021 Season Begins – Bleacher Report

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is eligible for a contract extension. However, the Giants shouldn’t be in a rush to grant him one. Barkley is coming off a torn ACL, and it remains to be seen if he can return to the Pro Bowl form he showed as a rookie in 2018.

The Giants need to figure out if Barkley can be the same special back he was before the injury. To do that, they need to devise a game plan to keep him healthy and on the field in 2021.

The Giants and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett have a couple of options. They could regularly spell Barkley with free-agent addition Devontae Booker. They could also look to lean more heavily on quarterback Daniel Jones and new pass-catchers like Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and Kyle Rudolph.

It will be a tricky balancing act, as New York presumably also wants to contend this season. Garrett and Co. must figure out a game plan that helps preserve Barkley’s health, provides a better read on Jones’ long-term prospects and gives the Giants their best chance to win games during the regular season.
