New York Giants headlines for Thursday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

How Sam Beal stunningly survived the Giants’ roster purge – NY Post

He is sure he can help.

“No doubt,’’ Beal told The Post. “I bring my mental part, my physical part, my speed part. In this league, it’s a passing league. I feel I can run with anybody on the field, anybody you put in front of me I can run with. That’s just my cockiness. I just love to play football. You got a guy who loves to play football who can run around like me, hey, I fit the spot, I fit the location.’’

“He’s a guy that’s quietly improved for us,’’ coach Joe Judge said. “He’s a guy that hasn’t played a lot of ball in the last few years, but he’s gotten better for us day by day and then he’s been able to be competitive in some of the joint practices we’ve had.

5. Quincy Roche, EDGE, New York Giants (Waived by Steelers)

Roche entered last college football season as a top-100 player by many draft rankings but ultimately fell to the sixth round due to athleticism concerns. Still, he’s a polished pass-rusher who can make an impact, just not on the relatively deep Steelers. For the Giants, however, he could make an impact.

While the Temple and Miami (FL) product doesn’t fit the rangy mold we often see from edge defenders in New York, his ability to defend the run and do his job well could be valuable for a Big Blue defense that has taken steps forward already and now needs to shore up the margins under Patrick Graham.

New York Giants: They finish with a bottom-10 offense.

They signed Kenny Golladay, drafted Kadarius Toney and will get Saquon Barkley back from injury. But I’m not sure those moves are going to amount to much more than a marginal upgrade from last season. On paper, the Giants still have one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines. Jason Garrett is still their play-caller. And there’s no reason to think that Daniel Jones has resolved his ball security issues (his 29 fumbles over the past two seasons are tops in the NFL). The Giants’ issues on offense could be too much to even get them to mediocrity.
