Every team in the NFC West won on Sunday and each team showed high-powered offenses. If your nerves were bad against the Lions, wait until the 49ers face a team that’s familiar with them.

During the offseason, the 49ers elected to wait until Round 3 to address the corner position. They then doubled down by not going after some really good corners during the second wave of free agency, corners such as A.J. Bouye and Steven. Instead, the 49ers elected to stand pat and add a late addition in Josh Norman. Now it seems likely that Richard Sherman will rejoin this team after Kyle Shanahan admitted in the post game presser they have remained in close contact with the former 49ers corner.

5. San Francisco 49ers (1-0): A win is a win, but letting the hapless Lions have a shot to tie the game late means the 49ers have a lot to work on. Injuries to Jason Verrett and Raheem Mostert should give San Francisco cause for concern.

That was not an unrealistic expectation when San Francisco led 38-10 early in the fourth.

The Lions simply did not look like the better team on Sunday. Their defense basically failed to stop the 49ers for the first three quarters of the game, while the offense was incapable of creating big plays through the passing game until the 49ers were in prevent.

If there was one positive to take from the game, the Lions were successful on the ground, rushing for 105 yards on 4.8 yards per carry. It was also nice to see the Lions compete to the end, but there are still a lot of issues with this team that need cleaning up.

What on earth was that?

This was a piece largely about all the firsts in this game, with Trey Lance’s debut, Elijah Mitchell taking the Lions for a ride, DeMeco Ryans having a shaky debut etc. before the fourth quarter.

Well, let’s stick on that shaky performance from Ryans. The 49ers’ defense, without Jason Verrett and Emmanuel Moseley, just got torched by the Jared Goff-led Lions late in the fourth quarter.

This game was over. Over. Caput. 38-10 at the half.

And then it wasn’t. The Lions scored three times in the second half, with Goff finding D’Andre Swift in the third quarter, then Jamaal Williams and Quintez Cephus in the fourth quarter, both with two point conversions.

The only reason that second touchdown was possible was because George Kittle took an onside kick off the facemask, which the Lions recovered. The Lions managed to score both of those touchdowns without burning any of their timeouts.

Garoppolo’s biggest throw came midway through the third quarter when, with the 49ers facing third-and-8, the Lions sent an all-out blitz at the quarterback. The quarterback saw that the Lions had single coverage on Deebo Samuel to his right and let go of a pass just as he was being walloped by two Lions. Samuel came down with the ball along the sideline, then outran the Detroit secondary for a 79-yard score.

“I thought I’d just give him a chance, I tried to back-shoulder him a little bit,” Garoppolo said. “I got hit pretty good on it so I didn’t really see it, but it was kind of funny, me and Trent (Williams) were getting up from the pile and everything and the next thing we know Deebo was crossing the goal line. It worked out pretty well.”
