Green Bay drops a former The Spring League cornerback for a former All-ACC wide receiver…who also played in the MAC…and the SEC.

When pass-rusher Randy Ramsey was put on the injured reserve list last week, it freed up a roster opening that the Green Bay Packers used to sign cornerback Dominique Martin. Martin, a former The Spring League player, saw playing time in Week 1 in the preseason against the Houston Texans, but following the trade for former Giants cornerback Isaac Yiadom, the team has parted ways with the one-week Martin experiment in Green Bay.

The corresponding move with Martin’s release is the signing of former Missouri wide receiver Damon Hazelton, by way of Virginia Tech and Ball State. In total, the 6’3” receiver played at three college programs over five years, recording 163 receptions, 2,231 yards, and 21 touchdowns over that time.

Hazelton, a 2021 draft class undrafted free agent, most recently spent time with the Houston Texans but was released on August 11th, before the Packers and Texans squared off last Saturday. With 12 receivers on the roster, it will be interesting to see how much playing time Hazelton is able to record in tomorrow’s game against the New York Jets. With that being said, though, Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, and Randall Cobb will not likely suit up in the preseason, as they didn’t last week.

Still, there are eight other potential mouths to feed tomorrow at the position, and the team will once again have to shave off five players off their roster by 4 PM ET on Tuesday. If the Packers’ goal is to get answers about practice-squad-level receivers in the relative future, they’re doing a good job of manufacturing competition at the position.
