With the NFL draft a day away, Newsome’s name remains in the rumor mill

The NFL draft is officially just a day away. For the Cleveland Browns, it is two days away with it being highly unlikely that GM Andrew Berry will be able to trade into the first round. The Browns roster is pretty full at this point so trading up is a possibility but there are no starting positions available at this point in time.

One way a starting role could open up is if Berry trades CB Greg Newsome II. Cleveland reportedly had discussions about trading Newsome near the start of free agency. Newsome addressed the rumors directly recently.

With the salary cap set for 2024, Newsome’s fifth-year option on his contract had its value set. According to a report, the Browns plan to pick that option up but now comes a rumor that they could still deal him for a second-round pick:

Wilcots noted that Cleveland has depth and, while three corners start, it is tough to pay everyone. “Are you going to pay him $20 million a year? $15 million a year? Probably not” is an accurate statement.

Berry drafted CB Cam Mitchell, Newsome’s college teammate, who could slide into the slot role this year if Newsome is dealt away.

The Philadelphia Eagles, a front office that Berry is very close with, has a need at cornerback and two picks in the second round (50, 53). Pro Football Focus’ simulator accepted trading Newsome straight up for pick #50 which would give Cleveland the following seven selections:

  • #50
  • #54
  • #85
  • #156
  • #206
  • #227
  • #243

We will keep you up to date as rumors swirl throughout the NFL draft this week.

Would you be happy with Berry getting a second-round pick for Newsome? Do you think it is likely he will be dealt during the draft?
