There isn’t much firepower available to move up for a top QB

Good morning, Broncos Country!

Every day that goes by, the Denver Broncos inch closer to the NFL Draft. There are a lot of questions about what Sean Payton will do with the 12th pick. On Broncos Odds and Endzones Ian St. Clair and I tried to guess what Denver might do.

The discussion always revolves around the QB position. The issue that I keep running into is firepower. Does Sean Payton have the firepower to move up in the draft to get one of the top QB prospects?

I’m not sold on Bo Nix, who will probably be available at 12. Michael Penix, Jr. will also be a guy who could be there. Both of them could be possible in a trade-back scenario. It has become apparent that JJ McCarthy is coveted by teams that will be picking ahead of Denver.

That means drafting him will require a trade-up. Ian believes Payton will do everything he can to get his guy, but what will he use? What picks can they get rid of now?

The Russell Wilson era has created a debilitating scenario in Denver. No matter what Payton does, the Wilson trade and contract hurts. So, what firepower does Denver have now to move up for one of the top 4 QBs?

It isn’t much, and it involves mortgaging an already mortgaged future. I see a trade back in Denver’s future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Penix or Nix were in Denver next year. I could also see Spencer Rattler being picked up in a later round.

Payton will do what he can to get the QB he wants. But how much can he really do?
