Former Seattle Seahawks star cornerback Richard Sherman has been released from King County Correctional Facility following Wednesday morning’s arrest.

His criminal charges were formally filed on Friday, all misdemeanors: DUI, reckless endangerment of roadway workers, second degree criminal trespass (domestic violence designation), resisting arrest, and third degree malicious mischief (domestic violence designation). The DV designations are because the incident occurred at his in-laws’ residence in Redmond. He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.

You’ve likely read the reports, heard the chilling 911 call from Sherman’s wife, and seen the released doorbell cam footage of what happened that night/early morning. Let’s instead focus on what Sherman has just written on social media in his first public comment since his arrest.

“I am deeply remorseful for my actions on Tuesday night,” Sherman wrote (in case the tweet is not loading for you). “I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need.

“I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle. I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time.”

Sherman has remained unsigned in free agency after completing his three-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. But where he plays next or where he might sign really shouldn’t be a point of discussion any time soon. Yes he’s a football player he is above all else a human being.

Hopefully Sherman does get all the help and support he needs, and that him and his family can be happy, healthy, and safe together. He gave us as Seahawks fans the greatest nights of our lives. The least we can do is give our support as he goes through a difficult period in his life.
