The New York Jets’ implosion in Denver sheds light on a lethal combination of bad play
In Week 3, the New York Jets looked to bounce back after losing their first two games, the most recent of which produced an embarrassing effort against the hated New England Patriots.
Sights were set on the 2-0 Denver Broncos, who some may have overlooked early in the season, courtesy of a cake schedule. After all, the New York Giants and the Jacksonville Jaguars don’t exactly produce fear.
Unfortunately, some may have overlooked that the Jets, in this current iteration, are also one of the NFL’s basement dwellers.

The Jets started the game slowly, as per usual. Robert Saleh’s team found itself down two possessions at halftime, stretching the team’s first-half points deficit to a mind-boggling 46-3 over three games.
By now, everybody knows what unfolded in the second half—much. of the same. The Jets played miserably on both sides of the ball and fell by a 26-0 final at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium.
While the offense hasn’t been clicking for most of the season, save for the second half of Week 1 in Carolina, many expected Zach Wilson and company to take what Vic Fangio provided them.
As a classic quarters/lagged-zone defensive mind, reasonable expectations would lead some to think Mike LaFleur could bully the three-step underneath game. Other than one drive early in the game, however, that didn’t happen.
The coaches could hang their hats on the Jets’ defensive performance—if stretching the truth a bit is the name of the pep-talking game. Not in this game, though, as the Jets were gashed on the ground early, committed costly penalties, and benefitted from the Broncos’ second-half mercy.
While the defense struggled overall, there were some individual impressive performances that are worth discussing.
