The day before the draft begins, an offensive tackle is mocked to Kansas City.

On Tuesday, USA Today’s Nate Davis published his final 2024 mock draft, which included six quarterbacks in the first round. Before the Kansas City Chiefs went on the clock at 32, Davis picked six wide receivers and five offensive tackles.

32. Kansas City Chiefs: OT Jordan Morgan, Arizona

It would be fun to give the champs a toy like Texas WR Xavier Worthy, who set the combine record with a 4.21 40-yard dash. But a gaping hole seemingly remains on Mahomes’ blind side. Too big a need to ignore unless LT Donovan Smith re-signs or HC Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach have a yet-to-be revealed plan that makes more sense than gambling on 2023 third-rounder Wanya Morris. Barring that, Morgan could be the answer – and a significant improvement – particularly in pass pro.

Davis hits on an important concept: it’s fun for guys with no skin in the game to send super-fast wide receivers to Kansas City. Tyreek Hill was fast, right? Speed, however, was just part of what made Hill great in Kansas City — and continues to make him a great wideout for the Miami Dolphins.

But guys like Chiefs GM Brett Veach do have skin in the game. They have to continue to build at every position on the roster, including unglamorous positions in the trenches. In free agency, Veach has already devoted a lot of attention to the defensive line. But on the offensive line — particularly on the left — the team still hasn’t found a long-term solution.

It may end up playing out just this way: Veach will simply take his best-graded player at tackle or wideout.
