Indianapolis dodged a bullet as Ehlinger’s injury isn’t as severe than previously expected.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Sam Ehlinger will be out for the next 5-6 weeks due to an ACL sprain suffered late in the first half of Friday’s preseason finale against the Detroit Lions.

Ehlinger had an up-and-down preseason finishing with three interceptions and zero passing touchdowns. However, he did show some real escapability in the pocket.

Now, we’ll see how the Colts maneuver Ehlinger’s injury on the 53-man roster. The best bet is that Indianapolis places Ehlinger on the short-term injured reserve list, which opens up a temporary roster spot through the first month of the season. Will the Colts carry Brett Hundley as the third-string QB, or just roll with Jacob Eason behind Carson Wentz?

The Colts obviously like Ehlinger, mentioning multiple times since OTAs he has the “it factor” that’s hard to describe. Receiving praise from GM Chris Ballard and head coach Frank Reich along the way, I imagine Ehlinger will be activated once he returns from injury to soak up even more knowledge in the QB room throughout his rookie season.

What were your thoughts on Ehlinger’s preseason play, and how should the Colts address their soon-to-be open roster spot?
