The Indianapolis Colts are set to host the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2 of the regular season, but they won’t have to game plan for second-year running back Cam Akers, who suffered a torn Achilles on Monday.

There were high hopes that Akers would enjoy a breakout season as the lead back in Sean McVay’s offense. His production down the stretch of his rookie season showed true promise and many hoped he could be something close to what Todd Gurley was in that system.

The Colts have plenty of experience with the torn Achilles. Running back Marlon Mack suffered the injury just two quarters into the regular season during the Week 1 opener in 2020. He re-signed with the team this offseason but is likely looking at reserve duties.

The Colts also signed veteran left tackle Eric Fisher to a one-year deal despite the torn Achilles he suffered in January during the AFC Championship game. Then the Colts used their second-round pick on defensive lineman Dayo Oedeyingbo, who suffered a torn Achilles around the same time as Fisher.

With Akers out for the season, the Colts will now prepare for a backfield likely consisting of Darrell Henderson, Xavier Jones and Jake Funk.
