NFL Network draft analyst connects Vikings and maybe the Broncos to McCarthy, but not the Giants

When it comes to connecting quarterback J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants in the 2024 NFL Draft, it’s a case of which well-connected NFL insider you choose to believe.

Peter Schrager, former host of Good Morning Football, mocked McCarthy to the Giants in a trade up scenario this week, and continued to pound the McCarthy to the Giants drum in an appearance on the Colin Cowherd Show.

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah never mentioned the Giants as a possible landing spot when he held a pre-draft conference call on Thursday.

In discussing McCarthy, Jeremiah said “I don’t know who the other J.J. McCarthy team is” at the top of the draft if it’s not the Minnesota Vikings.

In speaking about the difficulty of evaluating McCarthy, Jeremiah again bypassed connecting him to the Giants.

“It’s a difficult evaluation because you can see him do everything you want him to do or you need a big-time quarterback to do, it’s just the numbers in terms of the volume is not there. You’ve got somebody that, if you look at him from a size standpoint, he’s put on like 15 pounds in the last year. I think he’s still growing into his body. He’s going to be a bigger guy. Everybody that was at the Pro Days that I talked to said he threw it as well or better than any of the top quarterbacks. He’s got a big-time live arm<“ Jeremiah said.

“You’ve got enough size, a guy that’s still growing. He’s got a big arm. He’s incredibly smart. There’s things you can latch onto there, and you’ve just got to have faith, some do and some don’t, in terms of what you’re buying there.

“In terms of him going, the Vikings are the team that’s connected to him, and then you have the Denver Broncos.”

Jeremiah did add that he would be “shocked” if McCarthy falls outside the top 12 picks, with the Broncos having pick No. 12.

Jeremiah seems to believe North Carolina’s Drake Maye is the Giants’ true quarterback target.
