Jaguars to release S Rayshawn Jenkins for $5.1 million in cap space, per report

The Jacksonville Jaguars will part ways with another member of their secondary. According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Jaguars are releasing safety Rayshawn Jenkins to clear $5,148,000 in additional cap space.

Earlier in the day Tuesday, multiple reports indicated the Jaguars plan to release cornerback Darious Williams as well.

Jenkins, 30, signed a four-year, $35 million contract with the Jaguars as a free agent after beginning his career with the Los Angeles Chargers. After a lackluster first season in Jacksonville, Jenkins became a valuable member of the secondary in his next two years.

He had a knack for delivering in some of the most crucial moments, including a game-ending pick-six in overtime against the Dallas Cowboys and a strip sack against the Tennessee Titans that sent the Jaguars to the postseason.

With Jenkins no longer on the roster, 2023 fifth-round pick Antonio Johnson is well-positioned to take over as the Jaguars’ starting strong safety in 2024 and beyond.

The Jaguars restructured Jenkins’ contract during the 2023 offseason, which means he’ll count against the team’s salary cap through the 2027 season. He’ll count as $7,136,000 in dead money in 2024, $3,852,000 in 2025, $2,568,000 in 2026, and $1,284,000 in 2027.
