The day after the start of Training Camp

A week ago, the announcement came down that Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback Jeff Gladney would have his case heard by a grand jury in Texas on 22 July. While it seemed unlikely that Gladney was going to be at Training Camp when things started, today’s announcement pretty much seals that.

Gladney’s court date has been pushed back one week to 29 July. That puts it a day after the start of camp at the Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center, so any chance that Gladney might have been there appears to have evaporated.

Gladney faces several charges, most notably third-degree family violence assault, stemming from an April incident with his girlfriend. If he is convicted, he’s looking at anywhere from two to ten years in prison.

The team has kept Gladney away from all of their Organized Team Activities and mini-camps since the incident took place, and will almost certainly be keeping him away from the facilities now as well. According to Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, a decision from the grand jury is expected by 2 August.

There are football ramifications to think about in this case, but as I’ve stated in basically every other story about it, they’re secondary to the other concerns here. When we know more about Jeff Gladney’s fate, we can talk more about how it affects the Vikings and things of that nature, but for now the focus is on the legal proceedings rather than on the football field.
